My post is almost late on the day I’m talking about past due invoices 😬🙃

Getting paid is kind of the point to running a business, so ensuring your clients complete timely payments is prrreettttttyyy important! ⌛️

Here’s some quick tips:

1. Ask Questions - is something going on to cause the delay? 💬

2. Offer a Payment Plan - if you can swing it, allowing them to spread their payments out as necessary is a kind move on your part and builds trust and rapport 👯‍♀️

3. Be Polite - no further explanation needed, but this ties above 💚

4. Follow Through on Consequences - if your contract states a late fee will be assessed or your work will not continue, be sure to enforce this rule when necessary 👩🏼‍⚖️

We have Accrual Basis Accounting and Cash Basis Accounting and the biggest difference?

TIMING! ⏰

Let’s break it down.

Accrual Accounting = Revenue is counted the moment you send off an invoice to a client

Cash Accounting = Revenue is counted when the client actually pays their invoice and that $$$ hits your bank account

This may seem small, but a change in accounting methods could mean BIG differences in your books (and thus, your taxes)

Decreasing expenses 😬

Do you track your expenses? I hope the answer is absolutely! But if you struggle here, there are some easy reports to review to help you determine where you can cut back.

1️⃣ Expenses by Vendor (Yearly)
2️⃣ Expenses by Vendor (Monthly)
3️⃣ AP Report

These reports will help you see who you’re paying, how often you’re paying them, and how much! They will also help you avoid late payment fees and interest.

The catch? As always, your books need to be up to date. Your reports are only as good as the data you put into your books!

How well do you understand your P&L? Is your P&L accurate?

You need to think about your P&L report like anything else in your business - it’s only as good as what you (or your bookkeeper) put into it.

Things necessary for an accurate P&L:
✅ Up-to-date bookkeeping
✅ Income and expenses correctly categorized
✅ Appropriate separation between COGS and expenses

When the above is done (correctly), your P&L can give you tons of helpful financial insight, such as:

💵 Develop accurate business strategies
💵 Prepare for any necessary financing needs
💵 Know your profit margin & understand where your money is going

1099-NECs 😳😳

I know, I know. They’re not due until 1.31.24, so why are we talking about them *now*? Because it takes time to get prepared for filing and you’ve got better things to do at year end!

If your business subcontracted any work and paid the individual or business $600+ in 2023, you may need to file a 1099-NEC for them.

Everyone knows what BRB means, right? OMW? LMK? IRL? LOL?

Now – how about the shortcut “NEC”? Do you know what that stands for?

… OK, I admit, that’s a trick question 😬 NEC isn’t actually a shortcut for messaging.

However, thanks to the IRS and some changes they made in 2020, this is actually a REALLY important abbreviation to know for your business taxes

Here’s the scoop:

NEC stands for “Non-Employee Compensation”

And, if you’ve ever hired contracted professionals for additional help in your business, or filed a 1099-MISC form for them prior to 2021, this change means that you’ll probably need to file your 2022 taxes a little differently.

And it’s especially important because the deadline for this new tax document is (wait for it) –

- January 31st - ! 😬

Yup, that’s only 6.5 weeks from now.

And if your business paid a contractor (like a web designer or a cleaning company) more than $600 in 2022, you’re required to file a Form 1099-NEC for them. (Unless they’re registered as a C-corp or S-corp – then you’re in the clear!)

Anyway, make sure to take a minute to double-check your 2022 expenses and see if any of your vendor payments triggered a need to file this form!
