Just a little upgrade, bringing the RAM from 8GB to 24GB and cloning the HDD to an NVMe M.2 SSD.

It's usually not a bad idea to check under the hood and do some dusting, oh maybe once a year at least.

Oh and if you're doing it yourself and creating some air flow, don't forget NOT to wind up that fan to that neat high pitched whine, that's super hard on the bearings you know.

SSD failure, no surprise!
(Happens too often. Hey, where did those old spinning platters go? LOL)

Problem…
Windows applications performing very poorly for weeks if not months. Then one day Windows has a critical error and must repair itself (for hours and hours). This is a bad sign and requires immediate attention to salvage user data.

Challenges…
(a) The existing drive in unable to be cloned due to critical drive errors.
(b) User data must be copied to a backup storage device.

Success…
(a) Easy, buy a new SSD. Do a fresh load of Windows. Deal with all the software licensing stuff. Such great fun!
(b) User is ecstatic with he computer performance now.

Hey, take a look inside your 1TB SSD. That’s it, not much more than a dime’s worth! LOL

By the way, upgrading from your old HDD to an SSD is probably your best bang for improving your old PC’s performance (second of course to RAM).

Just that patch cable again!
(another one of those self healing issues)

Problem…
One user on the network has lost stable connectivity. User’s PC seems to be ok. No other network user complaints.

Challenge…
(a) What is failing here? Is it an IP conflict, NIC failure, hard-wire failure, routing/switching, malware?

Success…
(a) Ah, you just have to unplug the user’s patch cable and plug it in again and voila!

RAM, hey don’t get so RAMY now!
(just another RAM upgrade)

Problem…
Just not quite enough oomph to this machine.

Challenge…
(a) finding compatible RAM for this old clunker.

Success…
(a) Another quick easy upgrade.

Hey, if your gonna do this yourself, don’t forget about ESD. It really is actually quite important. Grab cards by the edge. Never touch those very pretty gold tabs. That is actually gold. Oh, and make sure cards a well seated in their appropriate slot.

Argh, network down. It’s Christmas holidays!
(offline to online within only a few short hours)

Problem…
Users cannot access network resources and internet is unavailable.
Upon arrival at site the server was in shutdown. Since this server carries the role of DNS on this network, the internet not accessible.

Challenge…
(a) Looks like a system board error on the server. Is this an anomaly that will clear itself on boot?
(b) Should I point the DNS upstream while I attempt to resurrect the server? How fast or lucky will we be?

Success…
(a) My lucky Christmas holidays! The board anomaly did clear itself on boot.
(b) Oh, and I did the annual dusting as was obviously necessary.

Lights Out - Lights On!
(circuit board repairs)

Problem…
Lighting failures in GM dash, PRNDL and gauge back-lighting.
Inquired with local GM dealer for a solution. They simply send dashboards away for repairs with an associated flat rate fee of $400.

Challenges…
(a) Discovering whether this was a complex or simple repair.
(b) Sourcing back-lighting bulbs.

Success…
(a) Repairs were relatively simple.
(b) Third-party LED bulbs were readily available.
(c) Micro-cracking was discovered in the resistors delivering power to the PRNDL.
(d) Nothing a little solder won't fix.

Get that equipment out of the furnace room!
(organize server and hardware into new rack and relocate switches out of hot mechanical room)

Project Priorities
(a) Relocated network gear from hot mechanical room.
(b) Tidy up network cabling for troubleshooting and aesthetics.

Challenges
(a) Identifying each cable run and whether or not it was feasible or long enough to pull back to the new termination location.
(b) There was a mix of terminations 568A/568B.
(c) Sustaining uptime for users during working hours.

Success Story
(a) The whole project rolled out, to completion, very smoothly.
(b) Priorities were met. Suppliers delivered. Client was easy to work with.

THE Impossible Internet Service
(deliver internet to domestic residence, 750 ft. from fibre, via copper)

Priority...
(a) deliver internet with reasonable speed for remote worker.

Challenges...
(a) figuring out which cable was which.
(b) holding my breath that this would work at all.

The facts...
(a) Residence is 750 feet from grid, without line-of-sight.
(b) Residence is serviced by Telco via 750 ft. of copper.
(c) There were 2 twisted pairs available. I used 'em both, LOL.
(d) Due to the larger gauge Telco copper, wire impedance came in under 20 ohms.

Who would have thought we could even get service through that, let alone the numbers that came out the other end.

Success!
(a) shockingly high speed internet, check out the speed test pic above.
