Guess what we're working on...š¤
We had a great time partnering with a local organization to work with students in the community. During our reading camp, we practiced comprehension and phonics skills using interactive methods.
Organizations that partner with us receive quality reading instruction to help students retain skills during the summer and help their program stand out. DM us to find out how your organization can work with us.
School may be out but don't let the learning stop! Be sure to do a little practice each day. Stay tuned for part 2
Reading daily can easily be forgotten in the mix of the daily hustle and bustle. Set an alarm as a reminder to have your child practice reading each day.
Giving your child new experiences helps give them knowledge about different subjects. They can use this information to practice new vocabulary and to help them comprehend information when they read about new topics.
Children have more difficulty writing from the increased use of technology. Use paper and pencil to help your child practice writing letters, words, or sentences.
Create a plan for reading time. Think about books you'd like for your child to practice and activities to do. Lay the materials out ahead of time so that you and your child can begin to practice immediately and you don't waste time trying to figure out what to do or what materials you need.
Oftentimes children are taught to look at the picture to help them figure out a word.
Children may be able to use the picture strategy early on, but it can hurt them later.
Illustrations have their place, but children must practice reading the words to help build neural pathways in the brain.
When children rely solely on pictures, they are more likely to guess words and mistake words like dog for puppy.
Instead, be sure your child looks at the entire word, and include books with words they are familiar when practicing reading.

It's okay to step away. If your child begins to feel frustrated while practicing reading, it's okay to take a break. Stopping before reaching the point of stress will give you both a greater capacity for next time.
A problem we often see families make is waiting. Families often wait to seek assistance for their child in literacy, thinking that an issue will get better over time or will perhaps resolve itself. Instead, we suggest getting support before there is an issue. Building a strong reading foundation is a critical component of literacy success. Don't wait.
Doing this helps children to visualize the story. This is going to be very important as children begin to read books without pictures. Being able to create pictures as they read will help them better comprehend the text.
Just talking with your child for 30 seconds can make a difference. Children who have conversations demonstrate an increase in vocabulary and reading skills. Be sure to talk with your child today!
Finding time to practice can be difficult. If you're looking for more easy and fun ways to practice at home be sure to click the link to download our Weekly Practice Planner with activities for each day of the week. Happy Reading!
