Kala Farnham

Kala Farnham

"A classically trained musician with influences of pop, Broadway, and world music in her sound.

Farnham's sound can be compared to Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, and Norah Jones, but she definitely has a style of her own. Those who are fortunate to see Kala live are wowed the same way I was." - John Fuzek, "Roots Report" Motif RI

Mark your calendars for Sept 16th, featuring the music of Laura Nyro with support by yours truly! 🎶

📣ON SALE NOW: Studio Sessions presents Spero Plays Nyro (And a Touch of Bacharach) with support by CT State Trubadour Kala Farnham. This intimate, acoustic performance will take place on Saturday, September 16 at 8 pm in the Nancy Marine Studio Theatre.
In the one-of-a-kind show, “Spero Plays Nyro,” Christine Spero on keys and Elliot Spero on percussion maintain the integrity of Laura Nyro’s music while infusing it with their own unique personality. Christine has loved Laura's music from a young age when she was given a promotional copy of Eli and the Thirteenth Confession by a radio DJ friend. She was inspired by Laura's music to be bold in writing, singing, and playing piano. Laura Nyro was the quintessential singer/songwriter and pianist whose groundbreaking music crossed the genres of folk, rock, and jazz. She became one of the most covered artists in the 1960's and 1970's with such songs as “Eli's Coming,” “Stoned Soul Picnic,” “Wedding Bell Blues,” and “Sweet Blindness.” Her tragic and premature passing in 1997 shocked her fans and in 2012 she was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.

Grateful for the opportunity to pay tribute to the masterful songwriting of Carole King this past Friday at the Knickerbocker Music Center 💛

Thank you to Frank Viele , Nick D'Errico , and Marc Russell for their phenomenal musicianship; to The Knickerbocker Music Center for hosting us and offering a beautiful baby grand to play; and of course Carole herself for creating a brilliant catalog of music that has reached the hearts of so many.

Finally, thank you to all who joined us. We played to a packed house, and received not one but two encore requests at the end of the evening!

Keep your eyes peeled for future performances around New England 🎶

In this past week my work and music was featured by NPR ‘s Where We Live and Kala Brand Music, and Friday I walked onstage to a packed house for our tribute to the masterful songwriting of Carole King at The Knickerbocker Music Center 🎶

I’m truly grateful for the recent opportunities I’ve been offered to do my part in sharing music’s healing and connective power with the greater community.

I’ll share more on that later, but for now — tonight’s concert at Stanley-Whitman House has been POSTPONED — so I’m headed off to enjoy the holiday. Have a magical weekend! ✨

The Bread Box Folk stage was one of the first listening rooms I visited as a fledgling songwriter. My early experiences there left a lasting impression, painting a picture of the magic that could transpire between a well-versed singing storyteller and a captive audience. It’s an image that I carried with me throughout the years as I honed my songwriting craft and worked to crack through my shyness, bringing vulnerability and personability into my connection with audiences.

What a treat it was to return over a decade since my introduction to The Bread Box to share stories and songs alongside Hugh Blumenfield & The Faithful Sky. Thank you to all the volunteers who continue make this series possible year after year!

Next up: Join me for my debut with Huntington Folk Music Society at Hard Luck Cafe (w/ Lara Herschovitch) on Wednesday the 15th, followed by The Sounding Board (w/ House of Hamill) on Saturday the 18th 🎶

Last night’s CT Arts Hero Awards was inspiring and soul-filling. As someone who aspires to engage music as a medium to inspire growth, heal, and create community connection, each and every awardee had a story for me to learn from.

I was privileged to witness the work of Sosse Baker, an internationally known basketmaker, who has traveled to Uganda to help local makers create baskets that would be marketable to global consumers — Matt Conway, the founder of the Creative Leadership Internship Program, a safe and creative space where youth are exposed to real life public art opportunities and mentored working alongside professional muralists — and Bill Geddes, the founder and current president of the Woodbury-Bethlehem Community Music Foundation, who, at the height of the pandemic, donned a kilt and carried his Highland Bagpipes to the end of his driveway where he played daily at sunset, lifting the spirits of neighbors and others who came to listen from their cars. And many more.

(For a full list of this year’s arts heros, visit the CT Office of the Arts at CT.gov)

I am consistently blown away by the power of the arts to connect and uplift the human soul, whether through times of adversity or in celebration of life’s joys. The CT Arts Hero Awards leaves me with a renewed vigor to answer the question: what can we do to serve our community with the gifts we’ve been given? How can we join forces to uplift one another’s work and amplify creative voices?

2023 is a new year that holds so much promise. I can’t wait to see where it takes us.

➡️ Next up: Join me at the Sherman JCC Saturday, January 21st, for an evening of song and story featuring special guest George Mallas.

Ancient Vessel (Kala Farnham) - Live @ On Deck Sound Studio 7.23.22 11/01/2023

My song “Ancient Vessel” is now available on YouTube!

This song is both a mantra of gratitude, speaking to the power of the human mind, body, and spirit to overcome adversity ~ and a prayer to wisdom, that regardless of the challenges that come our way, we might find the strength to hold ourselves accountable in offering our best to the world.

Thank you to Tracy Walton at On Deck Sound Studio for recording this track and sharing a beautiful space to create in.
