💦💦💦How does not drinking enough affect the kidneys?
Every day, the kidneys filter around 120-150 quarts of fluid. Of these, approximately 1-2 quarts are removed from the body in the form of urine, and 198 are recovered by the bloodstream. Water is essential for the kidneys to function.
If the kidneys do not function properly, waste products and excess fluid can build up inside the body.
Si los riñones no funcionan correctamente, los productos de desecho y el exceso de líquido pueden acumularse dentro del cuerpo.
Untreated, chronic kidney disease can lead to kidney failure, whereby the organs stop working, and either dialysis or kidney transplantation is required.

Prevention
Chronic kidney disease
- Manage underlying conditions:Follow the advice of your GP, take any medicine you're prescribed and keep all appointments relating to your condition.
- Stop smoking
- Healthy diet
* plenty of fruit and vegetables – aim for at least 5 portions a day
* meals that include starchy foods, such as potatoes, wholegrain bread, rice or pasta
* some dairy or dairy alternatives
* some beans or pulses, fish, eggs, or meat as a source of protein
* low levels of saturated fat, salt and sugar
- Manage alcohol intake: Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol can cause your blood pressure and cholesterol levels to rise to unhealthy levels.
- Exercise regularly: Regular exercise should help lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of developing kidney disease.
- Be careful with painkillers: If you need to take painkillers, make sure you follow the instructions that come with the medicine.

Treating acute kidney injury
Treatment of AKI depends on what's causing your illness and how severe it is.
You may need:
✔️ to increase your intake of water and other fluids if you're dehydrated
✔️ antibiotics if you have an infection
✔️ to stop taking certain medicines (at least until the problem is sorted)
✔️ a urinary catheter, a thin tube used to drain the bladder if there's a blockage
You may need to go to hospital for some treatments.
Most people with AKI make a full recovery, but some people go on to develop chronic kidney disease or long-term kidney failure as a result.
In severe cases, dialysis – where a machine filters the blood to rid the body of harmful waste, extra salt and water – may be needed.

Who's at risk of acute kidney injury?
You're more likely to get AKI if:
✔️ You're aged 65 or over
✔️ You already have a kidney problem, such as chronic kidney disease
✔️ You have a long-term disease, such as heart failure, liver disease or diabetes
✔️ You're dehydrated or unable to maintain your fluid intake independently
✔️ You have a blockage in your urinary tract (or are at risk of this)
✔️ You have a severe infection or sepsis
✔️ You're taking certain medicines, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), such as ibuprofen, or blood pressure medicines, such as ACE inhibitors or diuretics; diuretics help the kidneys get rid of extra fluid from the body, but may become less helpful when a person is dehydrated or suffering from a severe illness
✔️ You're given aminoglycosides – a type of antibiotic that's usually only given in hospital; these medicines are only likely to increase the risk of AKI if you're dehydrated or ill

🛑 Symptoms of AKI include:
⚠️ Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue
⚠️ diarrhoea
⚠️ dehydration
⚠️ Nocturia, frequent Urination or peeing less than usual
⚠️ Physiological weakness
⚠️ Insomnia
Even if it does not progress to complete kidney failure, AKI needs to be taken seriously.
It has an effect on the whole body, changes how some medicines are handled by the body, and could make some existing illnesses more serious.

🆘 Acute kidney injury (AKI) is where your kidneys suddenly stop working properly. It can range from minor loss of kidney function to complete kidney failure.
AKI normally happens as a complication of another serious illness. It's not the result of a physical blow to the kidneys, as the name might suggest.
This type of kidney damage is usually seen in older people who are unwell with other conditions and the kidneys are also affected.
It's essential that AKI is detected early and treated promptly.
Without quick treatment, abnormal levels of salts and chemicals can build up in the body, which affects the ability of other organs to work properly.
If the kidneys shut down completely, this may require temporary support from a dialysis machine, or lead to death.
AKI can also affect children and young people.
