AI Heifers 2024. Patches 👀 good
Internship for Shelby has moved into planning and learning the AI protocols as we started to place CIDRS in heifers yesterday.
“What they say?! Moo Moo”
We always ask her what animals say. I guess she was asking us this time. Off to deliver some of the local bulls this afternoon.
A couple of Reds soaking in the rays!
We sold out of blacks, but we have a few big reds left if you are looking. Testing the group next week.
Spent the week preparing for the worst, the blow that could feel defeating, and praying for the best.
Soaking in the mild temps in these roller coaster weather days the last two weeks.
We are sold out of blacks. We have some red boys left.
No School Today?! Do I have a deal for you. Grab a pitchfork. We have planned activities.
Baby calf pen is full so it was time to rotate them to the next spot and the next group of expecting mommas were shifted as well.
New Life.
When you are tagging a barn full of calves and pause to see life happen. “…you guys keep tagging. I’m going to watch this calf.”
Weighing, Tagging, Shots
When the desire to learn is strong, you let them try.
Miracle Calf right here! She was DEAD and a good mothering cow brought her back!
Austin noticed the cow calving this girl backwards. When that happens, you have just minutes to help her pull it out so when the cord disconnects, the calf isn’t still halfway inside. Austin rushed to her and finished pulling the calf by hand, but unfortunately she wasn’t breathing, even though he tried all of the tactics to spring her to life. So with many cuss words, a feeling of frustration and loss, he brought the calf into the barn, hoping that if the cow cleaned off the calf in the barn, he could spike a twin (we have a couple sets) onto her. He came back into the barn after shifting some cows around from their evening locked up bedding spots and the calf was BREATHING!! The momma cow had been relentless with nudging the calf around as she cleaned it off. It’s likely she did her own Mother Nature version of cpr to her calf. She had lost her baby last year (I don’t remember how) but she clearly wasn’t giving up on this baby 🙏🏻 Instincts in animals are just fascinating! She got up yesterday, was sucking, and is looking great this morning. We are just shocked and this girl is up, going, and doing well!
TWO years ago we were making the “calf only” areas for these girls. She isn’t understanding why she doesn’t get to stay in this area this go around and isn’t in a hurry to move out of our way. You can bet she was a cute calf!
🙏🏻 sunshine and a little more solid to the ground
Ranch Life is constant work…make sure to take the moments to capture the enjoyment too. Bedding barns ✔️ keep those babies warm and healthy
Halfway through heifers and they are in good hands.
Ready to roll out. We snagged some snapshot pics of a few of the bulls, so flyers are a bit thicker this year. Our littlest helpers couldn’t wait to get their hands on them…already had to save a stack from the clutch of their “help.” 😅
Let us know if you would like one. Our regular mailing list will be hitting the box soon!
Blankets of fog and fresh bedding. the boys
Pros and cons.
The warmer weather is bringing slop, however, the ears are safe right now.
Big Simmental Ears
The barn is full of babies, all right around this girl’s birthday! 3 years ago we had hfrs calving and a newborn. Now she just gets to tell each of them how cute they are 🙂
Things have been busy around here!
January 31st kicked off calving season for us with a heifer who did wonderful on her own.
Yesterday, 3 more arrived. A set of twins out of Faith’s heifer and a bull calf out of Hadley’s heifer. Those AI babies are on their way!
Calving Prep of Yesterday and Today- Calving pens and bedding of the barns! Littles 1, 2, and 3 were out there today. One came in before the picture due to a unfortunate hole find in her muck boot 😬 💦 Can you believe these temps right now?
Meet the Woodburys! Arnold and Todd reached out to us back in 2019 with what sparked this new endeavor alongside what we were already doing with our own commercial herd. While we lost our longtime friend and admired cattleman, Arnold, that summer, we have enjoyed getting to know Todd, Rebecca, and family over the years. The challenges, learning, and growing opportunities have been a blessing. Todd and Rebecca’s family started another adventure a few years ago, Woodbury Hatchery! They have taken it to incredible heights!!
Happy Independence Day! 🎆 🇺🇸
Group 3 AI is underway this morning!
Extra handsome helper today.
