🚨 Mold Cleanup & Safety Alert After Flooding

Flooding can lead to mold growth in your home, posing serious health risks. Here’s what you need to know to stay safe:

Act Quickly: Start cleaning up as soon as it’s safe. Remove wet items, and dry out your home as quickly as possible to prevent mold growth.

Use Proper Gear: Wear protective gear like gloves, masks, and goggles when cleaning mold to avoid exposure.

Clean Thoroughly: Use a mixture of water and detergent or a commercial mold cleaner on hard surfaces. Discard items that can’t be cleaned, like carpets, drywall, and insulation.

Air It Out: Ventilate the area by opening windows and using fans to reduce moisture levels.

Seek Professional Help: If the mold covers a large area or you’re concerned about your health, contact a professional mold remediation service.

πŸ’§ Flood Bucket Distribution: Thanks to The Salvation Army, Charleston, SC the County will have a few distribution sites for flood buckets this week. These buckets contain essential cleaning supplies to help you safely tackle mold and flood cleanup. More info coming soon!

TROPICAL STORM DEBBY IS FORECAST TO BRING POTENTIALLY HISTORIC AND CATASTROPHIC FLOODING TO THE AREA THIS WEEK
***Dorchester County is currently under a Flood Watch Until August 9th, 8:00 AM.***

Photos from Berkeley Electric Cooperative, Inc.'s post 05/08/2024

In addition to various sandbag locations the County has made available, Berkeley Electric has setup two in our area: Goose Creek and Moncks Corner.
See full County sandbag site list HERE: https://berkeleycountysc.gov/berkeley-county-prepares-for-historic-impacts-from-tropical-storm-debby/?fbclid=IwY2xjawEdvhJleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHeWvbv16vYkCVQeG-SNSj3HXT5qpFB50pzDIeNzJxts6HWj1BwNrxQukVA_aem_zW25SKkss65GPURe38WsAA

EDITED:

*New Health and Human Services Campus sandbag location is now closed as all supplies have been depleted.
* St. George Courthouse sandbag location has sand, but it is running low on bags.

Dorchester County will have two sandbag filling locations that will open at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, August 5, 2024, and will remain open until supplies last. Please note that there is a limit of ten sandbags per resident or business owner, and it is first-come, first-served.
Please bring a shovel as sites are a Fill It Yourself model with the county providing sand and bags.

β€’ St. George Dorchester County Courthouse, 5200 E. Jim Bilton Blvd, St George, SC 29477
β€’ Old Bi-lo Parking Lot/New Dorchester County Health and Human Services Campus, (Corner of Orangeburg Road and 17A) 1452 Boone Hill Rd., Summerville, SC 29483

Tips on how to properly fill and stack your sandbags:
β€’ Fill bags one-half of the way full.
β€’ Over-filled bags will result in a leaky sandbag wall.
β€’ Stack sandbags so that the seams between the bags are staggered.
β€’ Tuck the top of each bag under to ensure that each bag is sealed by its own weight

🚨 Storm Update 🚨
We have just concluded a briefing with the National Weather Service and want to update our community on the incoming storm.
β€’ The storm remains on its current course.
β€’ The forecasted storm total rainfall has slightly decreased but remains significant.
β€’ Some areas have already received rainfall today; expect the forecast to show additional rainfall.
β€’ Total expected rainfall: 10-20 inches, with localized amounts near 30 inches.

IMPORTANT: This does NOT mean the flood threat is lowering. We are still anticipating a HISTORIC rainfall event with areas of catastrophic flooding. This is a significant and potentially life-threatening event.
Stay alert and prioritize safety. We will continue to provide updates as we receive new information.

Tropical Storm Debby is expected to form within the next 24 hrs and impact our region throughout next week. Specific impacts and timing of the storm are still uncertain, but as of now, the main concern is significant rainfall throughout the entirety of Dorchester County. Currently, rainfall totals of 6-12 inches with locally higher amounts cannot be ruled out.

Now is the time to prepare by discussing your family emergency plan and making sure your emergency kit is stocked and ready to go. With significant rain and flooding being the main concern, it is important to remember the phrase Turn Around, Don't Drown! Never walk or drive through flood waters!

Again, there is still high uncertainty regarding the specific timing and track of this storm. Please continue to monitor your trusted weather source (NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center / US National Weather Service Charleston SC) and stay tuned to this page and Dorchester County Government for county specific updates.
