In this article, Aree Witoelar Improv gives us one of the most original and interesting improv observation I've seen in a long time.
The uncanny valley of improv When it’s not strange enough to be a comedy and not real enough to be drama
*my inner monologue*
・・・
Katanas are WAY cheaper than you’d think. Don’t ask how/why I know
I often hear about relationship vs. game, but a more productive conversation might be, "what's your preferred mix of comedy and drama?"
Ep. 7 of Rotary is out now! Rotary is an improvised podcast, and it's also my passion project. Listen wherever you get your podcasts!
Great improv is more than just good technique. Learn the techniques, then learn to trust your instincts. Follow your unique voice.
A Harold is like a thunderstorm.
The opening is a weather forecast about an incoming storm.
The first beats are clouds and rain rolling in.
The first group game is a sudden crack of thunder and lightning.
The second beats are constant rain with moments of thunder and lightning.
The second group game is a torrential downpour with constant thunder and lightning.
The third beat is a tornado that blows everything apart and blends the pieces together.
A key improv skill is recognizing what's already happening and choosing to do it more.
A comedic character's flaw can be contrasted by a voice of reason's virtue.
For example, a comedic character who is extremely vain can be contrasted by a voice of reason who is very humble.
This is not a rule. It's just a very useful comedic tool.
What are some ways that you approach playing a voice of reason?
Howdy Improv Explorers! More episodes of the podcast are in the works, but in the meantime I (Andy Barrett) will be regularly posting improv thoughts and tips to this page.
Today's improv thought:
The way you play scenes and the tools you use should be determined by the goals of your show, and where the scene is in your show.
If you're interested by this thought, Bill Arnett of Chicago Improv Studio talks about it in his excellent book, "The Complete Improviser".
What are the goals of your shows? What tools do you use? Let me know in the comments.
If you haven't heard, my friends and I launched a brand new improvised comedy podcast called "Rotary". Check us out wherever you get your podcasts!
We're back! In the newest episode of Exploring Improv, I interview Francisco Antillón . Francisco is an improviser, coach, and teacher at the Assembly Mexico in Mexico City. He is also host of a wonderfully succinct and informative podcast called Long Form Short Pod and author of the book "Long Form Short Book".
