It’s been a while. I hope everyone is doing well with everything that is going on right now. I also hope you’re using this time to work on your art, your home, and yourself. Attempting that myself and the first step was organizing and creating a new space for most of my supplies. I also got some pots and some flowers to plant. Tell me something you’ve done lately to improve your space, both inner and outer.
Tried something new last night. What was supposed to be a stenciled acrylic pour of a Beetlejuice silhouette ended up looking like this. I posted it on my personal IG story and expressed my disappointment with how it turned out. I was ready to chuck it in the trash this morning when I got a message from a friend saying they loved it and wanted to buy it. And so they did. Just goes to show you, art looks different to everyone.
$40 "No Feet Polaroid" acrylic on 8×8 canvas.
(im)perfect no. 1
This is the first in a photo series I will be rolling out as I work on my photography. It will feature myself and (hopefully) others. The goal is to capture and highlight the things we don't like about ourselves, the attributes we are uncomfortable with, our talents we are unsure of, all of our insecurities, and turning them into art and tell a story. To view our bodies and talents in a different light. To show us that even the worst that we think about ourselves is still beautiful. To prove that our imperfections make us perfect. And to hopefully help us love ourselves just a little bit more.
This first entry focuses on two physical things about myself. The first is my scoliosis. This is me standing up straight with the camera level, yet as you can clearly see, my left shoulder sits higher than the right and my spine towards the small of my back begins to curve to the left. Before I thought of it as a deformity, something grotesque. Now I look at it as a representation of the winding life I've walked. My right side, the side I use most, all of my accomplishments held close by gravity, keeping me grounded, while the left is my untapped potential. The things I have yet to do, reaching towards the sky, aching to get out.
The second isthe acne on my back. Some of these spots are freckles, but majority of them are acne. I get uncomfortable taking off my shirt around others, about going swimming, and being intimate with someone. Looking at it right now, staring it in the face, I don't see it in a negative light. I see an ever-changing pattern, each day different than the last, like dew drops on a blade of grass. I think of that girl seven years ago who laid next to me in bed and took great joy in popping the zits on my back. If they were so ugly, how could they bring her joy? Now they are a reminder that one of my worst parts of me was once one of my best to her.
