“Are you suggesting coconuts migrate 🥥?”
Do you recognise this castle? Famously, Castle Stalker appeared as ‘The Castle Aaaaarrrrrrggghhh’ in Monty Python and the Holy Grail (and it’s made appearances in Black Mirror and Highlander: Endgame too!).
From a small fort built in the 14th century by the MacDougall clan and later a castle which belonged to the Stewarts who lost it to the Campbells due to a bet, this place is perfectly magical and atmospheric and so close to Oban!”
Saw this new sign in Glencoe - one our tours we often stop to try haggis, our national dish (which honestly is really delicious!) - but of course you have to avoid them in the wild 😉. We have a few spaces left this summer for tours, it’s been so much fun showing so many of you around Scotland so far!
Have you seen a Kelpie? Kelpies are shape shifting spirits inhabiting many lochs in Scotland and often appearing as a horse waiting to prey upon people who get too close to the water! The Kelpies sculpture just turned 10 years old and was modelled on two Clydesdale horses called Duke and Baron. Positioned near Falkirk, they’re symbolic of the heavy horse of Scottish industry on the nearby canals - pulling wagons, ploughs and coal ships that were well known and important in the area. We think they’re pretty cool - especially at night when they’re lit up! 🐴

Linlithgow Palace - not too far from Edinburgh, was one of the main residences of the Scottish monarchs and the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. It was rebuilt a number of times over the years and Bonnie Prince Charlie himself came to visit in 1745! Sadly it was set on fire in 1746 by the Duke of Cumberland’s army who allegedly left their lamps on some straw but it’s been well looked after and has a lot of preservation work done recently which continues to be ongoing.
Is there a more stunning castle than Dunnottar?! We’re here on a tour today and this castle has been through almost every major event in Scottish history. It’s seen wars and battles, kept the Crown Jewels safe, held royal visits, and kept people prisoner! Such a great day out and a worthwhile stop on your Scotland tour!
Our first Scotland tour of 2024 was simply magical - it included the most incredible sunset at Glenfinnan and stargazing! Winter days like these are perfect for exploring ❄️
Victoria Street - my favourite street in Edinburgh which leads to the Grassmarket from the Royal Mile. It’s full of boutiques, eateries, cafes and said to have inspired Diagon Alley! Although it looks ancient, it was built primarily in the 1830s as part of the city’s structural reforms and did away with the steep narrow West Bow which back then was a narrow hazardous lane.
Scotland is an incredible destination at any time of the year! Next week we are so excited to begin our Scotland tours for 2024 with a wintery visit to the highlands. This is the stunning Loch an Eilean (loch of the island), a gorgeous freshwater loch tucked away in the Rothiemurchus forest, which is part of the stunning Cairngorms National Park near Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands.
Happy Hogmanay - or New Year! Hogmanay is traditionally Scotland’s biggest holiday and dates back to pagan times. During the Reformation partying or celebrating religious feasts was strongly discouraged and Christmas didn’t become a public holiday until 1958 so people celebrated and partied at New Year instead!
Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year and we hope to see you in Scotland in 2024! If you’re thinking about visiting Scotland (or elsewhere in Europe) and need a trip planned or a tour guide, drop us a line today! Let’s make it happen! 🥳
Edinburgh in all its winter glory! Our capital city js ranked one of the top rated festive destinations for Christmas markets, tasty food stalls and numerous events throughout the winter! If you haven’t been to Scotland at Christmas - come on over!🏴
The huge 65-foot high spruce tree all the way from Norway is the centrepiece of Glasgow’s beautiful Christmas market! Scotland’s biggest city is filled with Christmas cheer this year - from the funfair at George Square to lots of food and crafts down at St Enoch. Scotland at Christmas is a great time to visit and soak up the festive atmosphere 🎄
Enjoying a coffee at the Abbot House - a gorgeous building dating from the 16th century (but it may even be older!). It has changed hands lots of times belonging to various Earls and even Anne of Denmark - wife of James VI/I. It’s adjacent to the historic Dunfermline Abbey - one of our favourite places if you’re a Scottish history buff as it’s where Kings and Queens (at least six!) are buried including Robert the Bruce and Dunfermline also once had a palace and was one of the seats of the Scottish kings. 👑
We can’t wait to take you here next year! If you’re looking for a day trip from Edinburgh or a multi day Highland or Scotland history tour - drop us a line!
Autumn in Scotland is delightful - grabbing a coffee and having a walk to see the changing colours all around you is a fantastic way to spend the day! We’re here at the Falls of Falloch, a lovely wee waterfall in the Loch Lomond & the Trossachs national park
Kilt Rock (called so due to its resemblance to a kilt’s pleats) and Mealt Falls are just a few of the jaw-dropping sights on the Trotternish peninsula on the gorgeous Isle of Skye! 🏴
My favourite castle in Scotland is Stirling - it has it all, a royal residence, a strategic defence and beautiful gardens and views and featured heavily in the Scottish Wars of Independence and later as a royal palace for James V and Mary Queen of Scots. You can even see marks in the stones from the siege of 1651 when Cromwell invaded Scotland.
Robert Burns visited in 1787 and was moved by the sorry state of the castle, writing:
“Here Stuarts once in glory reigned,
And laws for Scotland’s weal ordained;
But now unroofed their palace stands,
Their sceptre’s swayed by other hands”
Maybe what you need in your life is a wee wander through the gorgeous village of Crail? Part of the Fife Coastal Path goes along this village which offers great cafes, sea views and beautiful architecture perched at the edge of the sea.
We love taking guests through Crail on our way to St Andrews!
Let’s walk towards Glasgow Cross, which was one of the most important places in ancient Glasgow! This hub is where 5 roads intersect and was a focal point of life in medieval times! You can still see a number of structures from the 17th and 18th century including the old Tollbooth steeple and the Tron Kirk which is now a theatre. Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city and a great place to visit on your trip to Scotland - full of great food, world class museums and architecture and of course great people because !
Gorgeous Dunure Castle in Ayrshire sits perched at the edge of the sea, a relic from the 13th century but still standing. Scotland has been estimated to have had over 3000 castles throughout its history and there’s well over 1000 still around today!
The Isle of Skye is next level beautiful! This area (the Quiraing) was formed millions of years ago from a landslip and Skye is full of incredible beauty. It’s always a pleasure taking guests here to discover it’s beauty and charm!
St Conan’s Kirk is an incredible fusion of historic types of architecture- Saxon, Celtic, gothic, Romanesque and many more. Although it looks ancient, it actually was finished in 1930 and built over more than 50 years allegedly for the mother of Walter Douglas Campbell who found the journey to her church too far and arduous. It’s a magical building right on the banks of Loch Awe and a marvel of talent and accomplishment!
Imagine seeing this gorgeous sea view from your castle?!
Home to the Dukes and Earls of Sutherland, this imposing castle resembles a French châteaux and is worth a visit when you’re in Inverness as it’s just slightly out of Golspie which is less than an hour away from the highland capital!
Keeper of the castle 🥰
Luss, an ancient village at Loch Lomond and the ancestral seat of Clan Colquhoun is home to a conservation village and a number of medieval monuments and lovely shops. Sitting outside in the summer sun at the coffee shop enjoying tea and scones is an experience not to be missed!
Summer in Edinburgh! Princes Street is the Main Street in the new town but unique in European capital cities because it’s only one-sided, giving you amazing views of the Princes Street Gardens and Edinburgh Castle!
It was originally supposed to be called St Giles Street after Edinburgh’s patron saint, but George III (who never came to Edinburgh) objected and it was named Prince’s Street in honour of his son - but the apostrophe disappeared by the 1830’s giving us the current spelling of the street name today.
A rainbow over Loch Linnhe! 🌈 The west coast of Scotland is often known for being damp but then we get beautiful moments like this 😍
Our tours are filling up for summer 2023! We’ve began day trips from Edinburgh to the Highlands which is a great way to get a taste of the scenery Scotland has to offer! Here’s one of our favourite stops: Historic Glenfinnan where Bonnie Prince Charlie sailed into Scotland on Loch Shiel 🏴
Inside Dunfermline Abbey (finished around 1250) you’ll find the final resting place of many of the ancient Kings and Queens of Scotland - including Robert the Bruce (well, most of him - his heart is actually in Melrose) who is buried underneath the pulpit of the church. It’s an amazing place to visit and full of history and medieval charm.
Fair fa’ your honest, sonsie face,
Great Chieftain o’ the Puddin-race!
It’s Burns Night in Scotland 🏴 where we honour the birth of Robert Burns, our national poet - born 25 January 1759.
Traditionally many people eat haggis, neeps and tatties tonight - here’s my attempt from a few weeks ago. Delicious! 😋
