Ira & Isla Baby and Kids

It feels like forever I have been on here, however it was a moment of great sadness for me and all my family members during the half term due to my father’s death.

My father was an inspiration to me from a very young age, he was a pioneer in the textile industry when he decided to set up his own textile company in 1980 producing bed linen and quilts for the retail market and built an enviable reputation within the British textile manufacturing industry for the quality.

At the time of my birth, the company had developed such a rapid rate further investment was made which led to an increase in staff numbers as well as providing local jobs within the British manufacturing industry. In 2000 a new manufacturing site was acquired increasing production and
local jobs in the north of Britain. 🇬🇧

It is a privilege to be able to continue his love 🫂🤍 for the British manufacturing industry and to help and support local ateliers across Britain. Having an ethical manufactured business is such a strong personal value for me and was also for my father and my father always had an appreciation for British design.

I want to express my heartfelt and gratitude to each one of you who is reading this. Thank you so much for this community, compassion, support and kind words that lift me each day to continue. I am immensely grateful to have you by my side. 🤍

I have been very quiet on here lately as I try to complete patterns and toiles. I am now onto the final couple of pieces! I am so excited.

We really do go beyond the balance sheet and aim to be a force of good at Ira & Island Baby and Kids. We address social and environmental issues as part of our everyday strategy at Ira & Island Baby and kids.

We pride ourselves on sustainable sourcing, fabrics, waste and energy use and looking after our team. 🫂

I don’t post a lot of my initial design work, but this is what it usually starts off like and when we go into problem solving deeper problems during construction and development.

Here we are with knitwear pieces that will be coming very soon I hope 🤞. I support the knitwear designer by showing how she would add gathers to the sleeve through the flat sleeve pattern cutting method, she says I should write ✍️ a book 📕! I have honestly been thinking 🤔about it.

It’s been a long day and it’s only Tuesday!

I had little Ana at home today who is poorly 🤒 and I am also feeling very worn out and tired from being battered by this weather during school runs!

It is such a juggle with 5 little ones at times, especially when they get ill on separate weeks which could amount to having one home each week for 5 weeks. I then have to plan to work around them, and at times it’s difficult 😣.

I hope Ana feels better soon and is back to school soon so I can take some time to plan. There are so many things in development at the moment at the same time , it is overwhelming at times.

Hello everyone I am so grateful for the weekend 🥹🥲.

We haven’t been very active on here this week, I have been feeling very overwhelmed 🥺 with the amount of work that needs to be completed.

I have had to stop pattern cutting since Tuesday due to the extreme weather which has affected my hands. My hands become so dry and at times bleed 🩸. I hope the weather becomes milder next week and I can get back to completing the patterns.

We made it to the weekend, and end of the first week back at school and work!

Lots has been happening in the first week in the studio! We have so many exciting things that we cannot wait to share with you!

The development of pieces is a long slow process and many brands who launch 2 seasonal collections you will notice that they launch the same design in a different fabric or colour way. Here at Ira & Isla, we are able to excel beyond this and design dresses that are beyond magical, I absolutely love the development process and it is a form of art in itself for me. When my imagination is at its peak I can mock up a toile within an hour or two from a sketch. It’s my favourite part of the process.

TANGLED!

I absolutely love this image from the latest Fashion Editorial featuring dress LACE TRIMMED VELVET GOWN.

It reminds me of how I was feeling this morning or everytime when my two boys play games on me, completely TANGLED!

Harit was back to school today, luckily it wasn’t suspected conjunctivitis and turned out he had a swollen eye after an injury after playing football. He is much better, and thank you to everyone who sent messages wishing him well, you all are so kind.

I had a difficult start to the day as the boys decided to hide my phone early morning before school run, thinking it would be funny.

I didn’t realise how much I rely on my phone, I panicked 🫨! After a long discussion explaining a phone can’t walk, it doesn’t have legs and the boys admitting they were the last ones to see the phone, no one would tell me how it disappeared 🤔. Luckily, I found it hidden under the sofa cushions 🛋️ where they were seated on my return from the school run.

I am so glad tomorrow is Friday and the weekend is nearly here! I just hope no more silly games on me!

It’s been a long day!

I had a wonderful day in the studio continuing the development of pieces. We have some lovely delicate hand embroidery on some pieces mimicking natures buds coming soon! 🌸🩷💕

I also had my eldest son Harit who is 9 years old in studio today. He woke up with a swollen eye 👁️ lid and I panicked 🫨 . Gladly it isn’t too bad and he is on recovery.

He has been watching me-drafting a pattern for a gorgeous puff sleeve today and was surprised 😳 how fast mummy mocked up a sleeve & lining pattern and it all being perfect when sewn up. I would love to do a reel and share one day if anyone is interested in watching and learning. Tomorrow I will be continuing to complete in neat all going well and hopefully he is better and at school!

All my spare time is dedicated to work and even late into the evening I love to catch up on all the lovely grids on here.

I have been working with lightweight delicate fabrics today and it was lovely, I can’t wait to share more of what’s to come.

How will you be spending your Christmas Day?

We will be spending Christmas 🎄 Day with family in Oxfordshire.

My husband likes to get organised early, and he writes everything down - on big sheets of A4 paper 📝.

Presents are always after breakfast with the children, and the big feast is about 2pm. We will play games and there’s nothing like a family walk at Christmas. It’s great to escape the tension of assembling toys 🧸, washing dishes and competitive game 🎲playing. It also means I get a breath of fresh air!

The SALE signs that I keep seeing on children’s brands right now? There so many and is it sustainable? Exactly how low labour wages are they paying to their workers overseas? Have you ever experienced the feeling in the midst of this wonderful season, where customers have purchased dresses for their children for Christmas Day and festivities 🥳 see the same dress on sale for half the price just before Christmas Day?

There are brands that claim they are a British Brand but their stock is made overseas...

Sorry for this rant but I was in the midst of the laundry 🧺 from school finishing and all I keep seeing is SALE posts which is so disheartening.

The remaining parcels have been posted this afternoon and we will be taking a long awaited break until 8th January, we still be here on Instagram.
