Beast in the Maze

Matt loves Iron Maiden. Brian loves Phish. We force our music upon each other and discuss it.

11/01/2022

Hey everyone, just wanted to quickly let you all know that we do, in fact, still exist. Our latest episode has been recorded and is in editing so please bear with us. The holidays, work, illness, and being stuck in foreign countries have delayed us a bit, but don't think we've abandoned you yet! Keep an eye out for our upcoming discussion of Phish's "Farmhouse," which is coming soon. In the meantime, stay safe out there. 🤘✌

Episode 22 - King Crimson - Larks' Tongues in Aspic

On the newest episode of "Beast in the Maze," we're taking a look at one of the legends of progressive rock - King Crimson. Specifically, their fifth album "Larks' Tongues in Aspic." A complicated record with some insane percussion (including sheet metal, finger pianos, and toys), this one is a classic.

While you may not understand it (I'm not sure even guitarist/King Crimson mastermind Robert Fripp does), you are likely to enjoy it. So, join us as we talk about the album, the tracks, the instruments, and whether it's a good thing to eat a lot of organ meat, all at www.beastinthemaze.com or wherever you get your podcasts.

Episode 21 - Hawkwind - Space Ritual (1973)

This time on "Beast in the Maze," we're doing something a little different and doing an episode on a band we think more people need to know about - the wonderful psychedelic trip through space that is Hawkwind. A band that's had a revolving door of membership through its 50 year existence, Hawkwind are pioneers in many ways and also continual dabblers/experimenters.

The album "Space Ritual" is what many consider to be their essence - A live L*D fueled science fiction journey of light and sound. A full-on sonic attack. Join us as we enjoy the sounds of space rock at www.beastinthemaze.com or wherever you get your podcasts.

The difference between country and western came up on the podcast recently, and it turns out that the main difference is just that "western" songs tend to be about cowboys. Here's one such song.

Other bands!

Here at Beast in the Maze we're always coming up with other bands during our discussions of Iron Maiden and Phish, and our last episode was no exception, as we brought up about ten or so other artists! Many of these actually have appeal both to the rockers and the hippies, for example: Meat Puppets. Known to most people as the band that Nirvana covered three songs from on their MTV Unplugged performance, Meat Puppets have been around for decades and evolved through several diverse sounds. A band worth looking into, if you haven't.

Here's a track of theirs which was mentioned on episode 20 of our show, the song "Aurora Borealis" from their second album. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmAnzLxI-cA

Episode 20 - Billy Breathes (1996)

We're back, everyone! In this episode we look at Phish's sixth studio album. We have a lot to unpack in the episode, including Cayman Islands DJs, the band memebers having children, and how far you can see up Mike Gordon's nose on the cover of the album.

Oh, and the songs. We also talk about those. In fact, we run into one of the rare non-cryptic, totally-makes-sense songs we've heard so far in the soft and sweet "Waste." As usual, we also get off on plenty of tangential discussions and bring up loads of other bands. So, join us! You can catch the discussion on your favorite podcast app (spotify, google, apple, etc) or at www.beastinthemaze.com where we also supply some live picks. Cheers, and enjoy ✌️🤘

This week on the podcast, we're chopping up Iron Maiden's classic second studio album! We've waited a long time for this one, and it's finally arrived. Join us as we discuss all the ins and outs of the record, including the vocals of Paul Di'Anno, the singles associated with the album, and whether the album's title refers to more than just a song! OZZY OSBOURNE - "Perry Mason" (Official Video) 27/01/2021

Sometimes, we hold a nostalgic place in our hearts for the first album we ever heard by a great artist, regardless of whether it happens to be their best work.

In our last episode, one of our hosts brings up their early experiences with the Ozzy Osbourne album "Ozzmosis," and more specifically the song "Perry Mason."

Is it the best thing Ozzy ever did? No. Is it the second best thing? Also, no. Is it hilarious that the Prince of Darkness is singing about Perry Mason? Definitely. The thing about it is, it's still goofy fun, and sometimes that's good enough. To that end, and because we're always looking for opportunities to shout out other bands, here's "Perry Mason" from the Ozzman's seventh studio album "Ozzmosis" (1995): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QapkGK-6G90

Episode 17 - A Matter of Life and Death (2006)

This week on Beast in the Maze, we're taking a look at a not-quite-concept album from Iron Maiden, their fourteenth studio offering "A Matter of Life and Death".

Featuring songs with themes of war and religion, life and birth, and light and shadow, this album sits in the middle (chronologically) of the modern lineup's releases, but is unique even among those for being a bit darker and heavier.

Join us as we talk about the cover art, the lyrics, the themes, the solos, and also Game of Thrones and Perry Mason, all on "Beast in the Maze" wherever you get your podcasts or at www.beastinthemaze.com where we also offer more in-depth posts about the albums, live picks, and more. New Ears 04/01/2021

Hello everyone! At "Beast in the Maze," we are all about making your friends listen to the band you are obsessed with, and for our hosts those bands are Iron Maiden (Matt) and Phish (Brian), but of course there are zillions of other great artists out there! This week, you can find Matt on the New Ears podcast discussing a band which has likely influenced both of the above bands: Jethro Tull.

An interesting blend of folk, classic rock, and progressive rock, Tull is a band that's on a lot of people's radar but which also often fails to get the active listen they deserve. We talk specifically about their most well-known album "Aqualung," and while we go through it a track at a time we deal with things like the dual meaning of many of the titles, whether the album counts as a concept album, statements about organized religion, and who the title character might be.

We hope you'll join us, because Aqualung rules, and we think you'll really enjoy it. You can find the New Ears podcast on Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, or any of the major platforms, as well as at their Transistor site at https://new-ears.transistor.fm/

Episode 13 - The X Factor (1995)

This week on Beast in the Maze, we have finally reached the complicated and oft-dismissed Blaze Bayley period. Join us as we talk about this difficult album, which reflected a difficult time both for bassist/bandleader Steve Harris, as well as heavy metal music generally. The guys talk about their highlights, lowlights, the use of repetition, and the darker, thicker, bass-forward sounds being experimented with. Also, Brian gives us his pick for the next episode.

Next week - "The X Factor" (1995)

At last, we are about to arrive at the most controversial period of Iron Maiden's catalogue, the Blaze Bayley era. Having lost one central piece of the band when Adrian Smith left the band prior to recording their 8th album, Maiden would be dealt more blows following their 9th album "Fear of the Dark," with both the retirement of longtime producer Martin Birch and the departure of vocalist Bruce Dickinson, who felt at the time that Iron Maiden had "run its course," and wanted to put more focus on his solo career.

This loss can't be overstated, as Dickinson was, and still is, considered one of the best and most powerful vocalists of all time. However, bassist Steve Harris was always in the driver's seat of the band, and with some encouragement from his fellow bandmates, they soldiered on, recruiting Wolfsbane vocalist Blaze Bayley, who would front the band through 1998 and on two studio albums.

The first of these is "The X Factor." Written while Harris was going through a divorce, the album is overall perhaps their darkest, most depressing offering, and Blaze's tone and style of singing serves in many ways to reinforce these sorts of moods. It's an introspective album that turns many Maiden conventions on their heads, and is often dismissed outright by fans, simply because it isn't the Maiden they know.

To be fair, now that Bruce and Adrian have rejoined the band and continued to make great music, it's easy to see the Blaze era as transitional, which was not something the fans of the 90s had the luxury of. Perhaps, too, this now makes going easy on the album less difficult. After all, this definitely ain't "Powerslave" or "The Number of the Beast." However, there *is* a lot here worth remembering and salvaging, even if it admittedly is not the same old thing.

We hope you'll join us for the discussion! You can find us wherever you get your podcasts, and of course at www.beastinthemaze.com

Additional bands!

When trying to take turns discussing two bands as wildly different as Iron Maiden and Phish, we often bring up loads of other groups of musicians as reference points and/or shared interests.

Last week, in discussing the Phish album "The Story of the Ghost," we mentioned several, including Wilco, They Might be Giants, Soundgarden, Johnny Cash, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Ben Folds 5, and Talking Heads!

So for the purpose of variety, as well as airing out all the Maiden and Phish funk in here, we thought we'd offer you a live pick from one of the bands above. Matt's selected a live performance of "Crosseyed and Painless" performed by Talking Heads in Dortmund in 1980. Next time on "Beast in the Maze," we'll be taking on Phish's seventh album, and we're bringing along our friend and podcasting colleague Jonathon from the "New Ears" and "Bite of Passage" podcasts.

"The Story of the Ghost" is an album that's altogether different than what we've heard out of this band before, as it was borne of extended jam sessions in the band's self-described cow-funk style.

Iron Maiden - Burning Ambition 29/10/2020

"Burning Ambition"

As we continue to head toward our new episode on Monday, here's another early Maiden track to check out, which will be a part of our discussion.

Released as the B-side to Maiden's first single "Running Free," "Burning Ambition" is a bit of an oddball track for Iron Maiden. Written by Steve Harris when he was in his mid-teens, the track has a different sound than most he would go on to compose in his career with the band. A Somewhat autobiographical song, it reaches a bit into his more prog rock/less metal influences. Enjoy!

Iron Maiden - Burning Ambition Iron Maiden - Burning Ambition B-Side of the "Running Free" single

Iron Maiden - Stange World [The Soundhouse Tapes] 26/10/2020

The song that didn't make "The Soundhouse Tapes"

Over the last two days of 1978, Iron Maiden recorded what would become their first official recording - a three-song EP entitled "The Soundhouse Tapes." It immensely raised their profile in the British metal scene, and at 5,000 copies, has since become a $1,000+ collector's item.

Two of the three tracks would go on to be included (in better-produced versions) on their debut album, "Iron Maiden," with the third, "Invasion," remaining a non-album rarity. However, a fourth song was recorded, and left off of the EP, mostly because bassist and band leader Steve Harris wasn't happy with the production value. However, the track itself is quite interesting, and worth a listen.

"Strange World," which also appears on the debut album, is much different here than in its final, official incarnation. Featuring a bluesier, improvised-feeling guitar solo, the track has an overall different feel here. In fact, this should be intuitive since "Soundhouse" features a drummer and guitarist who would both be gone from the band by the time their first record hit stores.

While it's true that the production is lacking compared to all of Maiden's later work, it lends a certain character to the early recordings, and a little bit of tape hissing can't take away from the band's charm and talent. Enjoy!

Episode 10 - "The Man who Stepped into Yesterday" (1987)

This week on the podcast, we're stepping into the world of Gamehendge. We'll be talking about the Phish recording "The Man who Stepped into Yesterday," which though not an official studio release, is integral to the history of the band, and contains many songs which remain staples of their set lists.

A DIY recording, it was submitted as lead singer Trey Anastasio's senior project at Goddard College, and includes not only the songs themselves but narration in between explaining the plot ("TMWSIY" is a musical/rock opera/fairytale with a narrative). It is here that we first encounter the characters of Wilson, Tela, Col. Forbin, and many more. While being much more lo-fi than their "proper" albums, it's an interesting glimpse into the band's formative years, and provides a blueprint of what was to come.
