From Fell to Coast

From Fell to Coast

I am lucky enough to live and work in and around some of the most beautiful places in the UK. From fells to coasts, and everything in between! ⛰️🌊

📍Kilmory Knap Chapel, Argyll and Bute

There is so much history in this region, and the chapel in the hamlet of Kilmory holds more than its fair share of ancient artefacts.

Is there a better smell in the world than fresh sea air? 🌊

"To see the world in a grain of sand
And Heaven in a wildflower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour"

📍Sweet Sadie's Ice Cream Shop and Desserts, Dumfries

✅ Waffle
✅ Cookie dough
✅ Brownie bites
✅ Bueno pieces
✅ Cream
✅ Ice cream
✅ Nutella

Was it excessive? Yes. Were my eyes bigger than my stomach? Yes. Was it worth it?! Heck yes!

I do have a big concern about though. I'm concerned that they are WAY too close, and now that I've tried it once, it'll only be a matter of time before I'm back. 🍦🍨

📍My Living Room, Home

I did something a little different this evening. Something I have been desperate to try since I learned about it a couple of weeks ago: The Hogwarts Escape! 🪄

is an online virtual escape room, created by and which allows players to immerse themselves in a little magic. To read more about it, and give it a go for yourself, check out the link in bio.

Hint: being a massive Potterhead isn't necessarily going to give you an advantage, and this experience is great for anyone with any level of Wizarding World fan. ✨

📍Eskrigg Nature Reserve, Lockerbie, Scotland

Catching the evening sun with the dogs. It's not often I get Doug looking in the direction of the camera!

This cute nature reserve has a woodland walk, a wildlife pond, two hides for animal and bird spotting, and a visitor centre. It's well worth a visit if you're in the area.

Fun for all the family, with interesting information, interactive features and picnic tables.

📍St Michael's Church, Dumfries

Home of the Burns Mausoleum, St Michael's boasts a very impressive graveyard, full of monuments to Burns' contemporaries. We seem to spend a lot of time wandering through graveyards - it seems a little morbid, thinking about it, but it's actually very relaxing.

Robert Burns is a fascinating character, that I've been learning a lot about since my move to the area. His life was short but full, and his history is a big part of modern day Dumfries and Galloway.

📍Crichton Memorial Church, Dumfries

I do love a church. ⛪ Not sure why, because I've never been particularly religious, but they do give me a sense of calm. 😌

First one of the day was Crichton Memorial. What a beautiful building! We couldn't get inside because there was a wedding going on (congrats to the happy couple!) but that meant we had to explore more of the university and business estate.

We came across the which at which was a gem of a find! Coffee and cake today, but will be returning soon for lunch - the menu looks excellent. Keep your eyes peeled for a write up coming up. 👀

📍Famous Blacksmiths Shop, Gretna Green, Scotland

It was, unfortunately, quite a disappointing first experience of the Gretna Green Famous Blacksmiths Shop today. There are parts of the site that I didn't get chance to visit, so I'll go back and hope for better next time, but I was quite surprised to have such a poor experience, considering it's described as a "5-star rated attraction." 😕

Beautiful evening on the River Nith. 🌊

📍 Northwich, Cheshire, England

I've been back to the canal!

My latest blog covers some of the eateries in and around Northwich, which are accessible from the canal towpath. My parents' narrowboat has been at home at .marina for a few weeks now, so I've had the opportunity to visit a couple of times.

Check out the link in my bio for details on the Pizza Shed, Bar Wagon, pub, cafe and shop, and the fab 🤙

How early is too early to pack for a holiday?! 🏖️

A month to go until I'm off to Tayvallich, on a dog friendly trip to stay on the shores of Loch Sween. 🌊 A real coastal retreat, castles, beaches and ancient ruins await.

I spent several hours looking up "things to do" last night, and it's starting to look like my relaxing retreat may get a little busy!

There's home of the and the Otterprints gallery! 🎨 My love of history is insisting that we will need to visit Arichonan Clearance Village and St Columba's Cave. There's also Sween Castle, which is said to be the oldest in Scotland! 🏰

I've also got the booked, and looking at the pics on their website is a little torturous. That seafood though! 🦐🤤

Trouble is.. I'm ready to go NOW! ⌛

Sundays are best for brunching! Another visit to the Penrith institution that is with the girls. 🤗 Today's visit was top notch - read all about it in my latest review.

A Day Out in... 📍Galloway Forest, Scotland

Today has been a road trip through the forest, involving coffee stops, deer, and hidden goats. Take a look at my latest blog, to find out what awaits in the UK's largest dark sky park.

⛰️ What is a "fell"?

A fell is classed as a "high and barren landscape", and it comes from the Norse word "fjäll". It is used commonly in the Lake District to refer to the hills and mountains in the area. The Cumbrian fells were made famous, popular and accessible by Alfred Wainwright, who logged and diarised 214 fells. The highest of Wainwright's fells is Scafell Pike, at an elevation of 978m.

⛰️🌊 Why "From Fell to Coast"?

I wanted the name of my page to reflect me, but also to capture my love of travel. I chose "fell" rather than "mountain", because I grew up in the land of fells, Keswick. I was really fortunate to grow up in Keswick, literally in the shadow of the Skiddaw fell range, and my home now is the coast of Scotland. My life is literally fells to coasts and everything in between!

🖊️ Why blog now?

Honestly? I don't know why I've chosen now to start a blog, other than that I needed an outlet for some form of creativity. I have always loved writing, but I've never had much to write about. Within the past couple of years I've spent a lot of my time travelling around Cumbria and Scotland, and I've really enjoyed learning about all sorts of new places. The travel bug has hit me hard, and I can't wait to explore and write more!

📍Powfoot, Scotland

I've had such a lovely afternoon with my parents. This was the first time since my dad had surgery that he has been able to come and visit, so I took him to the "beach" for coffee and cake. ☕🍰

📍 Caerlaverock Castle, Dumfries, Scotland

Scottish history is rich, interesting and full of castles! This one in Dumfries is just down the road from where I live, yet somehow this is the first time I have visited! I suspect it may become a regular haunt. 🏰👻

🐶 - Dog friendly grounds, outdoor picnic tables so your furry friend can join you for lunch and a coffee outside.

🚗 - Plenty of parking on site

🚽 - Yes, toilets are clean and well maintained
