First Nations family who have gone through homelessness and housing insecurity need urgent funds to transition into a secure home.
[MONEY NEEDED BY MONDAY 23.08]
The mother and the grandmother of two young babies have gone on a long journey from living on the street to where they are now these past two years. Mary and Sarah are now in a position to pay rent in a stable home for themselves. Pay the rent back and help them move in.
The urgent funds are needed to cover the costs of the upfront bond and first month's rent. A total of $4000.
Due to Victoria's most recent lockdown, they have both missed out on work and due to frustrating bureaucratic issues they can't receive COVID disaster payments.
Securing this house is incredibly important to keep this family safe and together. The two girls were removed from their mother and grandmother at one point and reunified last year once safe housing was secured in 2020. If this lease is not secured, it places the family at risk once again of being removed from another.
So after many hoops, the family is very close to sharing a home together. Contribute what you can and share amongst your friends, family and networks.
***beautiful artworks in the cover photo done by the two talented little girls. the artworks are currently proudly displayed on their door
Pay the rent.

CONTENT WARNING: Black Death in Custody
JUSTICE FOR SETH
Seth was an Indigenous teenager who died in custody due to medical negligence on the 3rd of May 2018 two days after his 19th Birthday. His family wants answers.
Aboriginal people are the most incarcerated people on earth. In 2018 all children in prison in the NT were Aboriginal. Over 474 Indigenous people have died in custody since the Royal Commission into Deaths in Custody in 1991. This is systematic racism.
The coroners inquest into his death will take place on the 31th of August and the 1st of September 2021 in Perth. His family need funds to cover travel costs from Kununurra to Perth (Boorloo), which is over 3,000kms away. Tickets from Kununurra to Perth cost around 800 dollars each. The aim is to raise 10k to cover travel and accommodation for family members to attend the coroners inquest. Updates will be put on this fundraiser on how the money is being spent.
'Seth was sent to Banksia Hills detention centre Perth in April 2017 he was remanded in custody for juvenile offences related to a stolen vehicle's. On 1st of May he turned 18 and was transferred to the adult prison system despite the fact that he was an unconvicted juvenile, after 4 months custody in adult system he pled guilty after receiving legal advice and received 13 month sentence that in reality was a death sentence. Seth had pre-existing heart condition since childhood that was managed by a specialist Dr's and monthly medications and a planned surgery, on his entry to adult system they changed medications without consulting specialist who had made multiple attempts to tell department of corrections that Seth was due for life saving surgery in July 2017 which he never received instead Seth had a tour of some of the worst prisons in the country that ended on 3rd of may 2018 in Derby 2 days after his 19th birthday when he passed away from heart attack corrections say it's natural causes but it's not natural for a teenager to die in prison.
The coroner's inquest starts in Perth on 30th August, hopefully family can get some answers.' - statement from his family, Justice For Seth page.

Hey.
Four years ago I moved to Australia for studies and started s*x work to cover my tuition and bills. I haven't worked since March 2020 which has exhausted all my savings and forced me to move back to India. S*x work is my only source of income and in order to continue my career, I'd have to be back in Australia. After investing so much in Australia I am not in a position to ask my parents for further support and with the governments negligence, I am left with no support. With whatever money I raise I'll be able to pay for tickets + quarantine and bills once the borders open.

"MUTUAL AID IS…
Anyone in the community who comes
together to care for others with a wide range
of skills.
Mutual aid focuses on everyone indiscriminately, utilises whatever resources are available and assesses the needs of the community directly from community members.
Mutual aid groups and individuals address and understand the roots of systemic inequalities and try to support people who suffer because of them. They are also organised non-hierarchical and everyone makes collaborative decisions"

The tile starts with a teal background at the top, and fades to yellow at the bottom. The Food Angels logo is in the top right hand corner. Bold black text reads,
"THIS IS DIFFERENT TO CHARITIES BECAUSE…
Charities often participate or benefit from the
system which oppresses the people they claim to help. They give and assist to "look good", provide performative action or to receive something in return.
Charities commonly wait for donations, sponsor or grants before taking action without assessing resources in the team or community. They also focus on who is deserving of help.
EVERYONE DESERVES HELP!"

Mutual aid comes in every form. It uses
available resources to address the needs of individuals and communities expressed by members of said community. It is organised in a decentralised and transparent fashion utilising a wide range of skills.
Some examples of mutual aid includes;
Food Distribution
Financial Aid
Assisting with Daily Tasks/Services
And so many other things!"

SLIDE THREE:
A cream background with large black text reading "What is Mutual Aid?". Smaller black text reads Mutual aid is a voluntary reciprocal exchange of resources and services for mutual benefit. Mutual aid projects are a form of political participation in which people take responsibility for caring for one another and changing political conditions.
Large black text reads, "Why Do We Do This?".
Smaller black text reads, "The Food Angels came about in December 2020. It was started in response to the passing of community member, Bridget Flack. It was intended to support those mourning her, and those who had put their energy and time into the search for her. The offer of home-cooked meals delivered free to LGBTQIA+ people in the community during this difficult time of community grief posted on social media quickly grew to be known as 'The Food Angels'."
SLIDE FOUR:
A cream background, small black text reads, "After the passing of another community member, Chloe Slarks, later that month the need for this as an ongoing community support resource became more evident. We have noticed that The Food Angels has become a first point of contact for community members who may need more support than just food, and being able to reconnect them with the community and have them feel supported and cared for is one of the many reasons for this Mutual Aid. Some recipients were receiving food support from charities and other services during our COVID-19 lockdowns, however most of these services are no longer available to them, even though the need for support still remains.
Larger black text reads, "When Do We Operate?"
Smaller black text reads, "We deliver multiple times a week to our community, dependent on demand and availability of volunteers"
SLIDE FIVE:
A cream background with large black text reading, "Where We Operate". Smaller black text reads, At present The Food Angels is completely decentralised across so-called Melbourne, and cooks prepare food in their own home which is then picked up and delivered by our drivers to recipients homes.
Larger black text reads, "What The Money Will Be Used For:"
Smaller black text reads, "In the immediate future, the money raised will go to reimbursing our wonderful volunteers q***rs who have put their time, effort and love into this mutual aid. We are also committed to paying the rent, as we operate on unceded Aboriginal land. This includes: Paying for ingredients, paying for fuel for delivery, paying for other things that recipients need, such as bottled water. 10% of funds raised will go to Pay the Rent (paythenrent.net.au)
SLIDE SIX:
A cream background with small black text reads, "In the long term, we have bigger goals for this money. Some ideas include:
- Providing mental health training for all volunteers
- Funding a space for us to cook
- Store food and run the mutual aid
- Paying volunteers for their time, as a means of dignified, self determined employment for QTIPOC (q***r, trans or inters*x people of colour) and other trans and gender non-conforming people
- Expanding the mutual aid that we provide beyond food
The Food Angels acknowledge that we live, work and operate on the stolen lands of the Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung peoples of the Kulin Nation. Sovereignty was never ceded, and we recognise that settlers ectively benefit from the colonisation and genocide of these lands and their First People's. We are committed to paying the rent, platforming First Nations voices and supporting First Nations self-determination.
