Flattus

Flattus

Horns and Funk Flattus, the funk band began in 1991 in Pennsylvania, and existed from 1993-97 in Bloomington, Indiana. You be the judge…

Began by one brother Courtney and the other brother soon joined in. One of the first bands actively using a webpage since 1994. Did the Duffer Brothers hear “In The Nutgrove” at anytime between 1994-2015?

Floyd’s suite mate for a semester in Read Residence Center could sometimes be overheard singing Mr. Vedder in the shower, maybe? It was 93 after all….we love you Mr.

Look out for mister Mike Burton tootin his own horn with his Good Times horn section on Pigskin Day which is apparently today... Also, Usher has not yet required him to put on the rollerskates while playing shows with him but maybe soon..., you can't say we didn't try to prep him for that eventuality that is now his reality....

It’s game day! See y’all at halftime. God is the greatest! 🙌🏽

Now we're uncovering very early items....Our very first Btown show. Brian, Cornelius, Kevin, Floyd at the Read Hall coffee house, we opened with Floyd singing Pain Cave by Wayne & Garth, then CBoots gave Floyd his bass back and we launched into Stone Cold Bush by Red Hot Flea, then this little ditty by Primus that Floyd learned in one week or less. FUN FACT #226: Cornelius is doing both Les Claypools voice here and Tom Waits, and a few decades later Tom Waits would ask him to audition for his band.....

Ok Chauncey, what's the 'connection' of Flattus to anything about The National? well, they happen to have TWO long-term auxiliary members on trumpet and trombone, and Kyle Resnick was the very first person I ever met at IU at the Eigenmann Residence Hall. I believe he sat in with Flattus exactly ONE TIME at 2nd Story if my memory is not too shaky....🤩

Back in 2007, we made our television debut on The Late Show with David Letterman. Tonight Letterman returns to the Ed Sullivan Theater for the first time since he handed over the Late Show reins to Stephen Colbert, and we are so honored that he asked us to join him.

See you tonight on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert!

Found a clip of a COLLINS Living Learning Center yearbook online from the 1994-95 year. Almost missed the exciting conclusion of 'the band with the most votes...' since the bottom is cut off, luckily got the picture to lighten slightly....

What to do when no one wants to dance on the dance floor for your little funky band? Make up your own dance and then your own song called Steppin' and then hire some non-professional dancers to mess it up, but hey, one of them can do a breakdance 'helicopter spin' that the camera just missed.

Whoops, July since our last post and still haven't gotten on InstaTik yet. Just finished a PRIMUS book and almost forgot the huge influence from them on the creation of this ensemble.

Besides our name that a friend suggested, here we have a few tidbits. Matt Wilson looking like a LES doppelgänger and an early show cover of Nature Boy https://youtu.be/Fk-Ma2mJWKI?si=XW7HbfPFrYtsdPTH&t=1050

A heavy helping of extra wahwah on my Whip Cream electric violin please Mr.D ! We look back to Champaign-Urbana, Illinois and is this a meeting of Jethro Tull and Kansas? Joe Deninzon was helping out on a handful of shows in 1995, and when he asked to bring his electric violin guitar pedal thingy with, did we say YES? Funk yes we did! Why would we ever turn down the future violinist/guitarist of KANSAS...

There appears to be some Granfalloon Fest happening this week with Arrested Development finding their way to Btown, and also the former keyboard player for DANAGAS who created a band called Son Lux. Fun fact, apparently Mr.Lott wanted to be in Flattus but unfortunately, he came to town 1 month too late, for we were already defunked by then....

COLUMN: A Midwestern music mecca: why local bands love the Bloomington music scene 24/05/2023

Holy Moly it’s 2023 and Flattus is mentioned in the IDS ye’old college newspaper? What’s happenin’? Specifically, Tadas Paegle and they must be comparing him to Jeff Beck since quizzically a picture of Mr.Beck adorns the top? And those aren’t IU Candy Stripe pants, they are Potsdam Poopers pants from NY, just so we’re clear.

Tell me again the multiple ways that Flattus has nothing to do with Stranger Things ?

A jam by Miss Aretha Franklin at the same aforementioned Collins Fest but just 2 years later in 1997. We performed in 96 also (send us pics and videos please...) and in these two years it did NOT rain. Thanks to the generous Quintin Walls for videoing!

What more can be said about this moment at Collins Fest 1995? Collins' resident Cornelius Boots new song "In the Nutgrove" was just started, Janell was belting out the vocal part she made all her own, many students were dancing, Joe was filming, the heavens opened up, just in time for Kevin Leahy's drum solo...and he did not stop.

From the front at our Read Lounge 'full version' debut in 1994. In case you were worried about the bass players pants, magically he had shorts on underneath, maybe that was his natural stance??

Trying to find our place in the sun. Proper alignment is somewhat necessary guys, please get this right. Yes, we are going to need this for our Spotify profile circle in about 25 years. Hey Dave, down in back, okay well don't blame me when we only see your chin....

Zoom in and let us know what's going on here, we sure didn't know. 1994 our first feature gig as a band and now with 2 original songs. For the audio, most likely "The Trout" was turning into "Mighty Mouse" on the bari sax at least.

The second original song we ever had and written by Brian on Dan Weiner's mothers' old classroom Casio in Read Hall 614 in 1994. David Appelman is responsible for the great arranging and while someone else was slated to sing it, it was Michael Valerio who busted out the original recording vocals in super hero fashion and on the spot. For the album recording another amazing vocalist who was in IU Soul R***e with us, Ricky Gilliam, laid it all out. The amazing Lara Campbell, also from Soul R***e, joined us for this performance and her and Janell took it to another level.

May 1997 Indiana Daily Student newspaper. Thank you Laura Taflinger! Although I think Infectious Grooves might have something to say about Karen's supposed claim, everything else is pretty much true, except for the fact of leaving out the trombone extraordinaire Richard Dole. circa 1992 in Lambertville, New Jersey at the Kamensky Kasa. One of TWO house party shows we ever played. This is the fresh faced (high schoolers and college students) first horn version of Flattus and very likely our first ever performance of "Everyday Sunshine".

"Yes, Stephen he'll get right on that hit TV series idea, but maybe after we live through the 80's first. He's a bit attached to Chewie at the moment."

There seems to be a missing mention of a song that begins with "In" and a band that begins with "F" in the World's Turned Upside Down book. But for all you still 'non-believers' please read what was written.....

It appears that Netflix didn't want it being leaked that Cornelius Boots invented the premise and title to Stranger Things in 1994 in "In the Nutgrove", so in 1996 during a photo shoot for his band, they attempted open a portal to quietly whisk him away to the upside down. Luckily, the Courtney brothers skating teacher, Paul, used his time traveling Celica from 1981 and with the assistance of Diana Ross they 'respectively' thwarted this attempt.
