One of the students asked me, "So how long are you going to be here? We've had a different youth pastor every year for the past four years. I just want to know how long you plan on staying." I wasn't sure how to answer this. I said, "I hope to be here a long time". He rolled his eyes a bit at my reply, and I began to understand why the students didn't engage: they hadn't had consistent leadership or relationships. This gave me a bit more compassion for them and a little more patience with their apathy.
