Professionals know when to wave the white flag. What we mean is: If you’re going to be late on your manuscript, it’s better to surrender now rather than wait until the night before - or worse, the day of - your deadline to communicate about your delay. It’s just like when you’re stuck in traffic and know you’re not going to be on time. When your manuscript deadline is a month out, and you’re way behind schedule, don’t make the mistake of telling yourself you’ll make up the time by speeding on the freeway. It’s good manners to let your agent and editor know right away. That way they can help you. But it will also help your editor manage your project in relation to all of their other projects. Like we said before, they’ve got a lot of books they are working on. Giving them a heads up as soon as you can will not go unnoticed. Professionals manage their careers, while amateurs believe they can write 35,000 words in two weeks.

If you’re waiting on the right time to write your book, you are wasting your time. The best time is now. The conditions have never been better, seriously. The things you are waiting on can wait. Write what you know now. Procrastination makes you think there’s a perfect time. Perfectionism is another form of procrastination.

What’s great about this question is it gets to the essential intent of your writing. It clears away some of those clutter ideas that may be stalling or impeding your progress. Instead of trying to incorporate an idea, you’re focusing on and refining that BIG idea.

The thing about adding urgency to that big idea, it points to a problem or need for your reader. Your job as the writer is to state this problem and then provide solutions for it. Think back to our list of urgency marketing tactics - time, speed, scarcity, and FOMO.

For some authors, summer is a bonus season. With kiddos home from school, and vacation vibes all around, anything they can get done during this time is a bonus. That’s why goals beat intentionality when it comes to taking advantage of this or any season of life.

There is a belief out there that if you want something badly enough, you will make it happen. You will overcome the obstacles in your way and triumph. Passion makes for great Nike ads and the best kinds of movies. We love a character that digs deep and wants it badly enough. “Alexa, play Eye of the Tiger.” But where does that leave the rest of us when our gas tank is empty?

Passion can be a lousy friend if you’re waiting on it to help you achieve your writing goals.
