Learn a language for free 01/03/2016

Lately, I have been using Duo Lingo to learn introductory Spanish. So far it is the best language App I have encountered. I have also tried Memrise and various videos on YouTube. I really like the format of Duo Lingo, along with the fact that it is free! My favorite feature is that it sends pesky reminders to your phone and your email without you actually having to download the app onto your phone. This really helps to sustain the motivation needed to drill every day. Other features include a speech engine that detects your pronunciation, and the opportunity to interact with other learners in a category called “immersion.” I first learned of this program when my two-year old was playing around with Duo Lingo’s children’s language learning app. My wife had downloaded the interactive app onto her phone and my son loved playing the games. It wasn’t until I was listening to a Tim Ferriss presentation that I learned that Duo Lingo had a language app for adults, and that it was free. Try it out and let me know what you think! What are some of your favorite learning apps?

Storybird - Read, write, discover, and share the books you'll always remember. 29/02/2016

Storybird is a great way to get your kids interested in creative writing, even if they have trouble starting a story or think they’re not creative. It’s a story starter on steroids! The website is easy to navigate and has an app in the google chrome web store (that’s how I discovered it). I’ve played around with it and created a teacher account for my small group class. You can have your students create their own story from scratch – you start by selecting an illustration, and the program shows you related graphics from the same artist – OR you can design your own story template, like I did. I can’t wait to try this out when we do some creative writing in my English class. I am planning on making an instructional review video with pointers geared towards educators.

STEM teachers and homeschoolers - are you tracking the current NASA mission to Jupiter with your kids? How about the European mission to Mars? Unfortunately the Juno mission (Jupiter) doesn't land until July 4th, so the school year doesn't exactly mesh with the real-time results of the exploration. Nevertheless, the 2016 missions can inspire ways to get students involved in science.

How hard can this be? 28/02/2016

This video is tad bit dated, but It's still one of my favorite resources for understanding the mind of an LD individual. It describes the sinking feeling I experienced while sitting through just about every math or science class I ever took. I watched it years ago as part of a grad class, and I think every teacher should watch it at least once. This vid is also a great investment of time for parents of disabled individuals.

How hard can this be? This unique program lets viewers experience the frustration, anxiety, and tension faced by children with learning disabilities. Workshop facilitator Richard ...
