Hi I’m Laura & I’ve worked in the orthodontic field for almost 14 years. I understand treatment can be confusing.

My goal is to help you understand the orthodontic world a bit better and be informed rather than overwhelmed.

Yes, you should brush your dog's teeth. I used to brush Piper's about every week but since having my two little boys I have slacked. I will start being more consistent again - our doggies need good dental and oral health too!

Your reminder to FLOSS today! Flossing is definitely harder with braces but still needs to be done. This is also a benefit of Invisalign - easier and therefore usually better oral hygiene.

Wear your retainer!

Happy Easter 💙 Hope you were able to enjoy some time with friends and family today.

I'm always blown away by the amazing result of Class II correction. Having a Class II bite means your lower jaw is too far back and while it takes a lot of hard work it is so worth it in the end. Not only for dental health but for having better facial balance. Amazing results! Great job doctors and to the patients!

It's not always easy but it is always the best choice… Brush those pearly whites!

Anyone else have a 🤪

For real though, please remember to brush at least two times a day and for two minutes - MORE if you have braces 😁

Happy Halloween from my crew to yours!

Hope everyone had a fun and safe Halloween. We went as the Avengers – my three year old was Spiderman, my one year old was Hulk, and I was Captain Marvel. Any guesses as to what my husband was?

Did your little one just start braces treatment? They can still enjoy Halloween… Plenty of sweet treats her braces friendly, like chocolate and candy corn, or you can switch out all the candies for a fun toy!

31/10/2021

Oh no! Halloween with braces?!

If your kid just started treatment what should you do for Halloween… Well there's always chocolate or you can give other fun treats instead of candies.

I feel this to the fullest extent! Now that I wear a mask all day long at the office I never wear make up. Excited for when we can fully show our smiles but for now we'll keep smiling with our eyes!

What is the best Halloween candy to enjoy while wearing braces…

26/10/2021

The best candy to eat with braces!

If you are in orthodontic treatment you need to stay away from the sticky candies and also the hard crunchy candies so that leaves a whole category of delicious treats… Can you guess what it is?

A treatment modality like Invisalign gives you a bit more flexibility but these are still some good tips to follow.

Do you have to fix your bite?

Yes, it is best so if you have the ability to I really would recommend you correct your bite!

The Herbst Appliance! It's a beast of an appliance, takes at least a week to get used to, but it does really amazing things and gives such a beautiful facial change!

I had a comment on my YouTube video requesting before and after photos. These are not my photos or the photos of my practice but simply images I found online. You should be looking at the area circled in blue to see the difference in the lower job position.

Absolutely amazing jobs by all of these orthodontists! The first photo is from Dr. Sally Gupton who is an orthodontist in Pennsylvania (I could not find her Instagram handle but if anybody knows it let me know). The next photos are from Fretty Orthodontics in Texas and then the final two I found on a research site but the cases belong to Dr. Moro who is a an orthodontist and researcher in Brazil.

Bravo 👏🏻 👏🏻👏🏻

Check out my last post for all the nitty-gritty details of how permanent teeth are numbered and if you learn by hearing instead of seeing then check out my next video!

Permanent teeth!

This is a comparison of alphanumeric notation (a modification of the Palmer notation, this is what orthodontists use), Palmer notation (mostly used in the UK), ISO notation (used internationally), Universal Numbering System (Sometimes called The American system because it is pretty much only used in America), and paleoanthropology notation (used by paleontologists).

In the Universal Numbering system the tooth designated "1" is the maxillary right third molar and the count continues along the upper teeth to the left side and then from the lower left side to the lower right side. Each tooth has a unique number.

The ISO System uses a two-digit numbering system where the first digit represents the quadrant of the tooth and the second digit represents the number of the tooth from the midline of the face.

The Palmer notation method consists of a symbol (┘└ ┐┌) which designates the quadrant of the tooth and a number which indicates the position from the midline. Adult teeth are numbered 1 to 8.

The alphanumeric notation labels teeth 1 to 8 starting at the midline but instead of using the symbol it labels them as the upper right (UR) quadrant the upper left (UL) quadrant the lower left (LL) quadrant in the lower right (LR) quadrant.

Baby teeth!

I hope these photos are not overwhelming but they give a lot of great information. If you are at the dentist or orthodontist with your child and you hear a lot of letters… more than likely they are discussing the baby teeth are labeled by the letters A through T. These pictures also give some good information on when baby teeth grow in as well as when they fall out or "shed"

Not all young kids need an early first phase of treatment... but some do.

The Appliance!

From their website - BRIUS® has two main components: a rigid bar and flexible arms. The arms are chosen via a complex Finite Element Analysis (FEA), to apply the ideal force/torque to each tooth."

Moving each tooth independently can mean shorter treatment times than traditional braces or aligners. On average they seem to be about 9-12 months compared to the traditional 18 months.

Since the appliance is glued in it means you have to keep it clean and watch what you eat so you don't break it... but no needing to be compliant with wearing your aligners. Taking them out to eat and brush but making sure to wear them 18-22 hours per day.

Lastly, it's on the back of your teeth… So actually 100% invisible!
