The US military in Japan has started to bulk buy the country's seafood in response to a Chinese import ban after the release of treated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant.

The US ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel said Washington may also look into other ways to help counter China's ban.

He described it as part of Beijing's "economic wars".

China, which was the biggest buyer of Japanese seafood, said it barred imports due to safety fears.

Last year Japan exported more than 100,000 tons of scallops to China. The first purchase under the US scheme is a fraction of that - just under a metric ton of the shellfish.

Mr Emanuel told the Reuters news agency it is the start of long-term contract that will extend over time to all types of seafood.

The purchases will be used to feed military personnel and be sold in shops and restaurants on military bases in Japan.

"It's going to be a long-term contract between the US armed forces and the fisheries and co-ops here," Mr Emanuel said.

"The best way we have proven in all the instances to kind of wear out China's economic coercion is come to the aid and assistance of the targeted country or industry," he added.

The US military had not previously bought Japanese seafood in Japan and Washington may also look at its fish imports from Japan and China, Mr Emmanuel said.

In response to Mr Emanuel's comments, China's foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told a news conference on Monday: "the responsibility of diplomats is to promote friendship between countries rather than smearing other countries and stirring up trouble".

In recent months, Mr Emanuel has spoken out about China on various issues including its economic policies and treatment of foreign businesses.

Israel tells 1.1 million Palestinians in north Gaza to get out now - as ground offensive looms
Israel's military has urged all civilians - about 1.1 million people - in Gaza City to leave their homes.

The UN earlier reported the message from the Israeli Defence Forces - but we've now heard directly from Israel's military.

"This evacuation is for your own safety," the IDF said - in a strong hint that it's set to begin its expected ground assault.

More than a million civilians are being told to move southwards below Wadi Gaza, a wetland area, within 24 hours.

They will only be able to return to Gaza City when the IDF says it is safe to do so.

"The IDF calls for the evacuation of all civilians of Gaza City from their homes southwards for their own safety and protection and move to the area south of the Wadi Gaza, as shown on the map.

"The Hamas terrorist organization waged a war against the State of Israel and Gaza City is an area where military operations take place. This evacuation is for your own safety.

"You will be able to return to Gaza City only when another announcement permitting it is made. Do not approach the area of the security fence with the State of Israel.

"Hamas terrorists are hiding in Gaza City inside tunnels underneath houses and inside buildings populated with innocent Gazan civilians.

"Civilians of Gaza City, evacuate south for your own safety and the safety of your families and distance yourself from Hamas terrorists who are using you as human shields.

"In the following days, the IDF will continue to operate significantly in Gaza City and make extensive efforts to avoid harming civilians."

A 25-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a man in Gilford, County Down.

Eamonn Darren O'Hanlon was stabbed in Hill Street in the village in the early hours of Saturday.

The 36-year-old later died from his injuries.

Frank McAlinden, whose address was given as The Bell Inn in Shrewsbury, appeared from Lurgan police station via videolink on Monday at Newry Magistrates Court.

He also faces a further charge of possession of an offensive weapon, namely a knife, with intent to commit an indictable offence.

A police officer told the court that police had received a report of the incident from the ambulance service in the early hours of Saturday.

Acting on information from witnesses, three people were arrested but subsequently released.

The officer said the defendant had then handed himself in at Lurgan police station, where he told officers: "I'm sorry I didn't mean for any of this to happen."

No application for bail was made.

The defendant was remanded into custody and will appear in court again on 16 June.

A man bought a car and celebrated the purchase with his family and friends. After everyone had retired to their respective homes, they went to bed.
