Advocacy - Action Alert & Petition • CMHAM - Community Mental Health Association of Michigan 06/12/2022

Advocacy Update:
During the Senate sessions last week, Senate Bills 597 and 598 were introduced but did not pass. These bills would have made significant moves to privatize all or parts of the public behavioral health system and eliminated local oversight of the Medicaid funds designated for these services. Specifically, in this last version of the bills, children in foster care would have been moved to a single managed care organization, affecting how, where, and from whom they could have received behavioral health services. While we are encouraged by the failure of these bills to pass the Senate last week, there is one legislative day left in this year and we have substantial concerns that the language from these bills could be “inserted” into other proposed bills and passed as part of a larger, bundled piece of legislation.
We believe strongly that every attempt to change or improve the public behavioral health system needs to include those who are providing and receiving these crucial services, and should not be made hastily at the end of the legislative term.
We encourage you to continue to reach out to your local legislators and the Governor and share your thoughts on privatization of the public behavioral health system and the effect that it could have on the individuals we serve. Use the link below to send an automated message to your legislators. It only takes a minute and add your personalized message, if desired.

Senator Shirkey wants to eliminate our local governance and give mental health care decisions to out-of-state based insurance companies. The legislation under consideration in the Michigan State Senate would eliminate the existing Michigan public mental health care system and shift $3.5 billion of these state and federal dollars spent annually on this to private for-profit insurance companies based in Missouri, California, Minnesota, Arizona and Indiana.
