We know that trying to express for your baby can be challenging whilst you are on a neonatal unit with your baby. Here is some useful information about expressing.

If you were in neonatal care and expressing for your baby what tips would you give a new parent to help?

We are deeply saddened by the death of Queen Elizabeth ll. As a working mother, grandmother and great grandmother she tirelessly served her country for 70 years. Our deepest condolences and thoughts are with her family at this incredibly difficult time.

“Today’s Neonatal Care (Leave and Pay) Bill, introduced by Stuart C McDonald MP and backed by government, will allow parents to take up to 12 weeks of paid leave, in addition to other leave entitlements such as maternity and paternity leave, so that they can spend more time with their baby at what is a hugely stressful time.

Once in law, neonatal care leave will be available to employees from their first day in a new job and will apply to parents of babies who are admitted into hospital up to the age of 28 days, and who have a continuous stay in hospital of 7 full days or more.”

This is such incredible news and an amazing recognition about the support that NICU parents need. I know there’s so many of us that would have loved this to have been in place when we went through it. I hope it gives parents facing the NICU one less thing that they need to worry about, and that helps them feel important and seen.

Be aware, this is passing of a bill, there’s still work that needs to be done before it is law. But it is amazing steps in the right direction.

Thank you .mcdonald.snp for your work on this.

Please share with relevant networks.
We know that babies and families might have a different experience of neonatal care depending on their family income, the place they live, their ethnicity, disability or impairment and other personal circumstances.
Bliss, a charity for babies born premature or sick, is working with the Maternity Consortium led by Sands, the stillbirth & neonatal death charity and Tommy's to understand what areas of neonatal care could be made better and fairer. If your baby or babies have spent any time in neonatal care, or you are a healthcare professional who works with babies and families we'd love for you to take part in our survey. https://forms.office.com/r/WHPuj9aPj1

In a huge step forward, the Neonatal Care (Leave and Pay) Bill was introduced to Parliament last week. But this is just the first step of many for parents with a vulnerable baby to have extra paid time off work. We need at least 100 MPs to go and support the Bill through its next stage in July.

Did your baby spend time in neonatal care? Tell your MP what additional leave and pay would have meant to you and ask them to attend the debate about the bill: https://buff.ly/3OeAL9X

We know parents can carry the experience of having a premature or sick baby for a long time. Sometimes memories come back in surprising ways such as smells of a soap used on the unit, or a familiar bleep of a machine. Memories can also be triggered by due dates, birthdays and anniversaries. We are here if you need to talk [email protected]
