Last year around this time an article ran in that featured Black Chefs in Philly cooking and celebrating Juneteenth. The article was great, but ran at at time where COVID was hitting everyone hard especially Black and Brown communities, a trio of high profile racially motivated murders of African American men and woman were on center stage and peaceful protest and riots were global.

I was reading this article again today and the food they cooked was so nostalgic and beautiful.

The “African-American Flag,” was created by David Hammons in 1990

The flag was first shown at a show in Amsterdam titled “BLACK USA” a group show recognizing the lack of exposure and awareness of African American Artist in Europe organized by Christiaan Braun.

Hammons flag was inspired by two symbols: The U.S. flag and the Pan-African flag adopted by Marcus Garvey’s Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) and African Communities League in 1920. The Pan African Flag is made up of three colors.

- Red is the color of the blood which men must shed for their redemption and liberty
- Black is the color of the noble and distinguished race to which we belong
- Green is the color of the luxuriant vegetation of our Motherland.

The flag is 1 of 5 produced and one of the flags sold for 2 Million dollars in 2017! ( Amazing but also how much did Hammons see from that auction…)

When I look at Hammons “African-American Flag,” and updated Pride Flag with 11 colored stripes, there’s a personal connect for me there that I don’t get from their originals.

Yes, theyre just colors and shapes but they’re meaningful and representation matters.

Always giving myself new assignments to keep learning in the studio. Today’s learn was trying to light a can with splashes / not to drink this can of Big Star Marg until after I shot it (this is not a ad hah but literally when I moved to Chicago 10 years ago, these margs were my weakness 😵‍💫😅) if you live far away from Chicago and love then can their famed recipe 🌶😍

This E.T. phone home pizza by .tribbiani has broken my brain for the last couple minutes so I thought I’d share. 👽🛸

Pizza specs:
-Sourdough activated charcoal dough at 76% hydration, 48hr cold ferment
-Garlic cream sauce colored BLUE using all natural butterfly pea flower powder from
-Fresh mozzarella
-Eggplant E.T./bike, par-cooked prior to adding to pizza
-Fired in my Roccbox
