April 20, 2024, ran into two sources of inspiration at the Sneaker's Ball, Councilwoman Tiawana Brown (District 3, City of Charlotte, NC, pictured in back center), she's the first system-impacted person to win a City Council seat in Charlotte, NC. She had to endure a treacherous slander campaign from her opponent, but Tiawana prevailed by winning the majority of votes in all of the districts in Charlotte to win her City Council seat.

Miquelle West (pictured front center) is a successful fashion stylist in Los Angeles and the daughter of Michelle West. Her mother Michelle West was arrested in 1993 and sentenced to two life sentences and 50 years in prison with no chance for parole for non-violent drug offenses. Miquelle says she refuses to get married or have any children until her mother is free to see her daughter walk down the isle and see her grandchildren born. A Free Michelle West campaign is currently pushing around the nation to bring attention to Michelle and other women sentenced to life in federal prison with no chance for parole for non-violent offenses.

I am proud to announce that I have been selected to participate in JustLeadershipUSA’s (JLUSA) annual year-long “Leading with ConvictionTM” (LwC) leadership development program. LwC is rooted in the principle that the most compelling advocates for criminal and juvenile justice reform are those who have been directly impacted by mass incarceration. I look forward to bringing you updates on my experiences in the program over the next 12 months.

For over 60 years, Dr. Shayla James has been touching lives through music and education at Florida A&M University (FAMU). I had the honor of learning under Doc's tutelage back in the early 1990s in the percussion section.

Hubba Doc!!! It was good seeing you.

On this MLK weekend, FAMU's Marching 100 percussion section joined the MLK parade in Riviera Beach, Florida. As a former FAMU drummer from Fall 1990, my college years at this HBCU inspires the visions I have today.

Through life's ups and downs, the spirit of Orange and Green continues to inspire and guide me, for it was on those Tallahassee hills that I learned life's invaluable lessons, propelling me forward.

Many of you know me for my reentry work, but in my former career, I was the Spray Tech in the Public Works Department for the City of Riviera Beach. I worked tirelessly under the sun, using my four state licenses to apply restricted-use pesticides.

Today, I'm still with the City, but I've found my true purpose in reentry work. My experience as a Case Manager was invaluable, and I continue to learn and grow as the Reentry Coordinator.

Alongside my reentry work, I maintain my four state licenses for restricted-use pesticides and hold a Class-A CDL (Commercial Driver's License). I wear many hats, and my goal is to inspire others to explore diverse career options.

This is true, yet there are valuable lessons to learn.
