University of Toronto Faculty of Law Students' Research Symposium 2023
The inaugural student research symposium hosted at UofT Law.
The inaugural University of Toronto Faculty of Law Students' Research Symposium, a Canada-wide, student-run and student-targeted event held on March 24-25, was a resounding success. We were thrilled to see an excellent turnout of audience members from across the country, with the online nature of the conference making participation significantly more accessible.
The Symposium featured 19 presentations. The presentations were diverse, engaging, and presented with sound and novel methodologies. Organized in a workshop-style format, each presentation lasted 20 minutes, followed by a 15-minute Q&A session.
The keynote speech was delivered by the Honorable Justice Gloria Epstein, a retired judge from the Ontario Court of Appeal and a UofT Law LLB 1977, Hon. LLD 2022 alumna. Her speech emphasized the importance of gaining the trust of clients as lawyers and the significance of understanding lived experiences to achieve this goal. Additionally, she reminded attendees of the importance of balancing personal and professional life.
The inaugural awards ceremony followed the keynote speech, with two awards sponsored by Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP. Mirabelle Harris-Eze (3L) of the University of Calgary won the Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP Best Submission Award for her paper, "Avenues for Redress for African Women: Corporate Accountability for Environmental Injustice in Rural Nigeria." Jennifer Hauk (1L) of York University - Osgoode Hall Law School won the Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP Best Presentation Award for her paper, "What Does Credibility Mean To You?: A Transcript Analysis of R**e Myths and Stereotypes in R v Ghomeshi." Alex Rego (3L) won recognition for the Best Submission from UofT Law for his paper, "Entrenched Incentives: Offshore Money Laundering as a Collective Action Problem."
Congratulations to our award winners, and a huge thank you to everyone who made this inaugural conference a success!
