Kwawu is no doubt one of the unique naturally given features of scenery. However, it is about time to uphold our history and emancipate ourselves from all the colonial mispellings of names that alter our cultural identity.
The name is not Kwahu. The name Kwahu has no historical meaning that could be linked to any of the historical era of the people from the 15th Century to date. Kwahu is a name intentionally corrupted to misplace the identity of a great nation that was once referred to as a country by the Dutch. The name Korwu "go there and die" best described the people in the 17th century and was misspelled as Quahoo by th Dutch and same was captured on the Map of Gold Coast in 1629. The Okwawu " O! Kwaw ewu" emerged after the death Kwaw Baadu Koampata who was at the time the lead warrior of Kwawu and the chief of Bokuruwa in the 18th Century. Later, the name Okwawu got shorten to be called Kwawu in the mid 18th Century. The two names "Okwawu" and "Kwawu" were concurrently used until the British took over in 1888 when the treaty between British and Kwawu was signed. The change of name from Okwawu or Kwawu to "Kwahu" sharply begun in the later stage of 19th Century.
During that period many States and towns across the country had their names corrupted like Takyiman as "Techiman", Ofenso as " Offinso", Nkorkor as " Nkawnkaw", Obutu as "Awutu" and many more.
The name Kwahu represents nothing as far as the history and custom of the traditional state is concerned. It is our prayer to have this settled to give names of real historical link that hold cultural identity of the people. It is against this background, among others that the Ghana State Book Project is being undertaken to protect and reserve our cultural heritage through documentation of our traditional histories in Ghana.
We are currently engaging all stakeholders in Kwawu to have the 'confused' dust to the names settled once and for all before the Kwawu State Book get launched this year.
A piece of information.
Thanks.
