Vroom vroom!! The Racetrack Playa in is one of the most unique places on earth! The 28ish mile drive down a washboard gravel road took us about 2 hours each way, and when we got there it felt like another planet.

There are plenty of theories out there about what makes the Sailing Stones move, from 👽 to magnetic forces, but the mystery was solved a few years ago when scientists discovered that the rocks move when ice sheets less than a few millimeters thick start to melt and wind causes the rocks to slide. It may only happen once every few years, but the melting ice can move the rocks about 15 feet per minute.

The feeling of total isolation at the Playa was incredible and is definitely worth the trek!

It’s and while we aren’t in a park today, we are using the new app to plan all of our summer adventures! It’s so nice to have every park’s information consolidated into one spot, and the BEST feature is that you can choose which parks’ info to make available offline so you don’t have to worry about searching for a trail map with no cell service 🙌 Link in bio for more details.
