I'm not wearing a cardigan... I'm wearing a scrub coat. Which is similar-ish. But it's world kindness day! Be nice to those you meet. Are y'all wearing yours today??

As we get a little closer to Halloween I want to talk a little about another cause close to my heart. Food allergy awareness. Halloween is a holiday to dress up & have fun! But for little ones with food allergies it can be disappointing to only be able to eat a very few pieces of your treats. This year, please consider adding temporary tattoos, small slinkys, plastic rings, etc, to your goodies that you hand out. You'll make that baby so happy and it'll be one less thing that momma has to take away. Trust me, that'll make her whole day.

& last, but certainly not least, Melissa. Another Martin county girl, born and raised. She's a Christian mom of four wild things (her words, not mine! 😂). She's a wife and nurse as well. She brings medical knowledge as well as a mom of a big family experience to us. She knows the relates health issues of not having adequate access to diapers and wipes. We look forward to all of her help and insight!

Our advisory council member, Corinne, is a busy momma of four! She has a big family that had three kids in various sizes of diapers at one time. (Shew, that's a LOT of diapers) most days you'll find her working hard in Hertford's Food Lion, helping customers before going home to be a full time momma as well. She brings to us the knowledge of diapering several babies at one time and how challenging that can be! We look forward to all that she has to offer!

Meet Advisory Council Member, Brandi. She was the first to message me about volunteering for this position! She is very excited for a chance to give back to her community. She's a radiation therapist for Vidant & mom to a beautiful little girl. We are very happy to have her enthusiasm join us for this adventure!

Our first advisory council member! Samantha is a mom to two little fiesty girls. She is a case worker for DSS Children's Medicaid & sees the need for help all over Perquimans County. She is also a law enforcement wife/ K9 officer Momma! We are excited to have her point of view helping to guide & advise us!

The third and final co-director and creator of Little Steps Diaper Bank, Lou. A Christian momma of two. Her daughter has fought severe eczema, asthma, & food allergies over the years. Because of her extra sensitive skin she needed special wipes and diapers on top of all of the medications used. Lou knows, through experience, diapers can be especially expensive with a child who requires special things. Lou is also a proud law enforcement wife & works with Vidant Internal Medicine.

Our second spotlight is co-director, Abigail. She is a savvy business woman who owns a very successful daycare and dance instructor. She sees first hand that parents can struggle with providing diapers for daycare & she's aware of the effects that can have on a family. She is also a law enforcement spouse and momma to her precious daughter, Piper (who lovesssss Chick-fil-a!).

Our first spotlight is co-director, Regina . Mom of three beautiful children. As a mom of a special needs child she understands the struggle of buying diapers after Medicaid has paid for the small amount they'll allow monthly. She was the first to contact us about jumping in to help! She's also a law enforcement wife, Special Olympics Local Coordinator in Martin County, & Regional Chapter Coordinator with Autism Society NC. We are excited to have her join our movement!

In the state of North Carolina the first step for forming a nonprofit is to have three people to come together and be "incorporators". So, good news!! We now have three & I can move forward with the paperwork & file my $60 with the State Secretary to be incorporated!

A few statistics before we get started:

*In 2017 Huggies assisted in a survey that found 1 in 3 families have difficulty providing diapers for their children.
*The average cost of diapers for 1 child is $18 per week, or around $1000 a year.
*Babies who remain in dirty diapers are more susceptible to UTIs & frequent diaper rashes.
*It has been found that almost 3 in 5 patents have missed work or school because they didn't have enough diapers for home and daycare.
*diapers are NOT covered through food stamps or WIC.
