Things about college you need to know.

Most of the professors are there to help. All you have to do is ask. At FSW there is a writing lab, math lab, counselors, and many others. FSW started as a junior college with open enrollment. That is not the case with the major universities in Florida or other parts of the country. A required class is called Cornerstone, First Year Experience. It leads the new college freshmen through what they need to expect in year one. I teach this class online and on ground for the last seven years graduation rate have improved markedly.

My name is John Cantlon. I am a professor at Florida Southwestern State College. I teach student learning skills to incoming freshmen. I received my AA from Edison Junior College, my BFA for Florida Atlantic University, I completed my Master's degree at the University of Maine.

I was on the faculty at the University of Phoenix for 13 years, online teaching writing. In addition I was a faculty reviewer for five years at UOP. I was the yearbook advisor at the University of Florida for many years. At present I am professor at Florida Southwestern State College, Fort Myers, Florida since 2014.

I teach at class called Student Learning Skills for all incoming freshman. The transition from high school to college is an important step and many students do not have the skills for college work.
