Dear WPS Community:
WEF is always so proud of the commitment and outstanding work of our teachers, administrators, and staff. This year, in particular, we want to commend our staff and we also want to recognize our students and their families for their flexibility and resilience during challenging times.
WEF, in partnership with WPS, has reimagined our annual Celebration of Learning and has produced this video to highlight some of the amazing work of our staff and students during this unusual and unprecedented year.
Thank you to Superintendent Doug Lyons and all of our principals for your participation and support of this project. Special thanks to Diana Ho and Julia Sparano, Media Specialists from WMHS and Dolbeare, and student, Aidan Bright of the class of 2021, who pulled this all together to create this virtual celebration.
We hope you will enjoy and share our pride and appreciation of our WPS school community.

Our PreK-12 summer reading program information is now available on the Wakefield Reads website: wakefieldreads.org.
This website features a program overview and suggested summer reading lists.
All students PK-12 are challenged to read four books over the summer. As a special piece of this challenge, students are encouraged to read at least one STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) non-fiction title.
We are grateful for our partnership with the Lucius Beebe Memorial Library. The always incredible Beebe Library staff works in conjunction with our district librarians to create suggested reading lists and engaging programming throughout the summer.
Additionally, the Beebe Library continues to provide access to free reading materials and digital media. Please visit this site to access their digital subscription services: https://www.wakefieldlibrary.org/databases/
Wakefield Families,
Today, we write to let everyone know that we share the pain, anger, and grief regarding the senseless killing of George Floyd, and other acts of violence against communities of color, particularly Black men. The outrage that has gripped this nation is fueled by decades and decades of racism, hatred, and injustices that should never be tolerated. As educational leaders, we denounce all forms of racism and hatred and stand in solidarity with those protesting this unconscionable death, and the many that came before it.
The Wakefield Public Schools and the community we serve are determined to create meaningful and lasting positive change that addresses systemic racism. Through our curriculum review process, we will further develop our curriculum and educational goals to reflect a more substantive mission, practice, and set of values. Additionally, we will be looking for opportunities to listen, learn, and get feedback regarding current practices and future next steps.
Our District is facilitating conversations with faculty, staff and students to increase awareness and develop strategies to support all children and families with a culturally-relevant lens.
As a community, we must ensure that our shared values are reflected in the work that we do with all students and families in our community. It is not enough to have the majority of our students/families served well by our system, it must work for everyone.
Over the past few days, some have reached out looking for resources/information to engage students on the topic of race and injustice. We have included some of these resources below.
Addressing systemic racism is an ongoing part of our work as teachers and school leaders. We want to assure our community that we acknowledge that this work will not be easy or quickly resolved. We are committed to fostering a safe environment where all feel welcome and free to engage in open and honest dialogue. A first step for us is acknowledging that privilege is different for some students and not others in Wakefield, and we need to improve equitable experiences and outcomes for all of our students.
Sincerely,
Mr. Doug Lyons, Superintendent of Schools
Ms. Kara Mauro, Assistant Superintendent of Schools
Ms. Glavia Smith, METCO Director
Ms. Shannon Blacker, Doyle Early Childhood Center
Mr. TJ Liberti - Principal, Dolbeare Elementary School
Ms. Tiffany Back - Principal, Greenwood Elementary School
Ms. Elaina Byrne - Principal, Walton Elementary School
Mr. Matt Carter - Principal, Woodville Elementary School
Mr. Adam Colantuoni - Principal, Galvin Middle School
