1 Week has passed since the end of the 2023-2024 season. Our whole team showed so much growth throughout the year. We have continued to grow and perform at higher levels over the past few years. We are extremely proud of how our athletes have represented not only our wrestling team but the community of Hereford as a whole! Our All State wrestlers represented us with class, Proud of how they competed and how the season ended; we are so excited to have them back with us for 1 more run at it! 🫶🏽♥️ Here’s to more growth as we head into Freestyle and Greco season!

Day 4 Regional Qualifier Spotlight:
Junior Maira Villarreal, Junior Mareetza Maceda, Junior Azariah Martinez

Maira Villarreal: Wrestles at 126 pounds and has been wrestling for 3 years. Maira got 1st place at the District 3-5a tournament this past weekend. We asked Maira “In your opinion, what makes wrestling a unique and special sport, and how does it differ from other athletic experiences you’ve had?”
She responded “In wrestling you have to have a lot of dedication and grit for the sport because it’s not easy. Not only do you learn a lot about yourself but it also teaches you a lot of life lessons. Wrestling differs from other athletic experiences I’ve had because of the positive environment. My coaches and teammates have also had impact in my wrestling experience.”

Mareetza Maceda: Wrestles at 185 pounds and has been wrestling for 3 years. Mareetza got 1st place at the District 3-5a tournament this past weekend. We asked Mareetza “What initially sparked your interest in wrestling, and how has that passion evolved since your freshman year?”
She responded “During my freshman year, I didn’t have much passion for wrestling but over time I started to fall in love with the sport and the feeling you get before stepping on the mat It is something that I've never felt, and seeing all the work and time I put into wrestling payoff.”

Azariah Martinez: Wrestles at 165 pounds and has been wrestling for 5 years. Azariah got 1st place at the District 3-5a tournament this past weekend. We asked Azariah “What is it that you love about wrestling? ”
His response “I love that you can control the outcome of your own matches and you can feel every bit of improvement through your training and the work you put in. It’s also just such a fun sport to do nothing compares to the thrill you get in a close match”

This is our final day of showcasing our athletes before we compete on Friday. These 3 athletes have what it takes to compete with absolutely anyone in the state. We all are looking forward to watching them and all of our athletes show their abilities this weekend. GO HERD!! 🤼‍♀️🤼‍♂️ ♥️

Day 3 Regional Qualifier Spotlight:
Senior Mia Alonzo, Senior Diego Tino , Senior Juan Zamora

Mia Alonzo: Wrestles at 132 pounds and has been wrestling for 4 years. Mia got 4th place at the District 3-5a tournament this past weekend. We asked Mia “What advice would you give to younger wrestlers who are just starting their journey into wrestling whether it be younger kids or even freshman just coming in?”
She responded “ I'd say embrace the discipline and hard work that wrestling demands. It's not just about physical strength, but mental toughness too. Learn from each match, win or lose, and always respect your opponents and coaches. And most importantly, enjoy the journey and the friendships you'll make along the way.”

Diego Tino: Wrestles at 113 pounds and has been wrestling for 4 years. Diego got 4th place at the District 3-5a tournament this past weekend. We asked Diego “How has being apart of the wrestling team affected your overall High school experience? ”
He responded “It’s helped me discover who I am and how life is. Overtime, I’ve learned to be grateful for those who I can call friends thanks to the team I’ve been around for years.”

Jay Zamora: Wrestles at 132 pounds and has been wrestling for 5 years. Jay got 4th place at the District 3-5a tournament this past weekend. We asked Jay “In what ways has wrestling changed you and has it taught you any important lessons that you’d like to share with everyone?” His response “It has changed my entire mentality on life it teaches you that you have to work for what you want and that’s a great lesson for life in general you can’t just expect things to go your way if you don’t work for it.”

We have some state tournament experience in this group of Seniors. We believe that all 3 will do their best to earn their spot to compete at State next week! 🫶🏽💪🏽

Day 2 Regional Qualifier Spotlight:
Freshman Maegan Hernandez, Sophomore Eli Arredondo, Sophomore Valori Porter, and Junior Julian Garcia

Maegan Hernandez: Wrestles at 235 pounds and has been wrestling for 2 years. Maegan got 4th place at the District 3-5a tournament this past weekend. We asked Maegan “Outside of wrestling what are your interests and hobbies?”
She responded “I would say definitely my other two sports volleyball and softball, doing makeup on my friends, watching documentaries/interviews, and hanging out with my nieces.”

Eli Arredondo: Wrestles at 190 pounds and has been wrestling for 4 years. Eli got 4th place at the District 3-5a tournament this past weekend. We asked Eli “What drew you to wrestling?”
He responded “What drew me to wrestling is that it’s just you and yourself against one man, and what you put in you get out”

Valori Porter: Wrestles at 165 pounds and has been wrestling for 2 years. Valori got 4th place at the District 3-5a tournament this past weekend. We asked Valori “Why do you like wrestling?” Her response “I like wrestling because it’s a place where I made friends. It’s way for me to get my anger out, to stay in shape, and it’s my happy place.”

Julian Garcia: Wrestles at 285 pounds and has been wrestling for 3 years. Julian got 3rd place at the District 3-5a tournament this past weekend. We asked Julian “How do you stay motivated and push through challenging times in your own wrestling journey?”
His response “I have friends who push me and motivate me to do my best and not give up on myself”

We cannot wait to get out there and compete this weekend! These young Athletes all have goals of punching their ticket to the State Tournament!! 👊🏽🤞🏽

Day 1 Regional Qualifier Spotlight:
Freshman Lyla Zambrano and Sophomore Javyer Mendoza

Lyla Zambrano: Wrestles at 120 pounds and is in her 2nd year of Wrestling. Lyla got 2nd place 🥈 at the District 3-5a tournament this past weekend. When asked “What is your favorite thing about wrestling?” Lyla responded with “I love the environment and getting to compete solo, winning feels good knowing i did it & having a coach that supports me”

Javyer Mendoza: Wrestles at 175 pounds and has been wrestling for 4 years. Javyer got 2nd place 🥈 at the District 3-5a tournament this past weekend. When Javyer was asked “What is your favorite thing about wrestling?” His response was “The blood, sweat and tears poured into battling through 6 tough minutes, and the camaraderie built with teammates who endure the same feeling.”

Lyla and Javyer compete for a chance to go to the state tournament this coming weekend at the Region 1 tournament at the First United Bank Center at WTAMU. These two athletes have dealt with a ton of ups and downs this season and we are looking forward to seeing them test themselves as they attempt to punch their ticket to state!

Hereford Rumble 🤼 🤼‍♀️ is in the books! Thank you to all the people who came out to help and thank you for all the support the city of Hereford showed us with donations to our tournament. Wrestling Season is officially in full swing! On a day to express our gratitude and thanks, the Hereford Wrestling team would like to say Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!
Our Wrestling Girls competed in Tascosas Annual Pre Turkey Tango yesterday, and we’ve made a ton of improvements just 2 weeks into season. Had a few girls bring back some Hardware, and finished 5th place as a team. Both Boys and Girls are back in action next week at Randall!

The 2022-2023 season has come to an end and the UIL State Championship concluded yesterday. Our kids competed tough and it was an experience for all that qualified. One of our own, senior Jose ”Boat” Palacios made it to the State Championship finals and came away with 🥈 at 106 lbs. The growth that this kid has shown in 2 years is incredible and we will miss him in our room next year. Congratulations Jose on this amazing achievement and thank you to everyone who supported us this season we are so grateful!
