Last week I attended an indie writers’ conference where, on the final day, there’s a huge book sales event. All genres are represented – from children’s books to fantasy to horror to mystery to romance and more. By far, though, it appeared that the fantasy authors were out in force.

I got chatting with an older man who wrote thrillers. When I told him I wrote mysteries, he said, “I should have guessed you didn’t write fantasy.” I asked him why and he said, “Because your hair isn’t purple or some other wild colour.”

True, there were some colourful heads in that ballroom. But I know several poets and authors whose hair is a “wild colour” and who write something other than fantasy.

The episode reminded me of my childhood – an older woman in my hometown had blue hair, usually put up in a French roll. Turns out that the blue came from overloading her hair with purple shampoo, which as you’d know if you have blond or silver locks stops the colour from going brassy. But use too much and you risk a decidedly purple or blue tinge to your hair. This woman had much more than a “tinge” – her hair was about the colour of a peacock. She was fairly well off, so in my naïveté I concluded that blue hair was a sign of wealth.

Today blue hair is a sign of free spirits. As is pink hair, rainbow hair, green hair. And now, when I think back about that woman in my home town, I wonder if she was simply a free spirit who refused to go along with the crowd.

Pretty sure it rained all night but if this is the result it was worth it. Happy Friday all!

Today I'm making gluten friendly minestrone (to die for) and my world famous gluten friendly granola (ditto). Both will be on offer at the Auxiliary Bazaar and Marketplace - Gibsons Legion, Saturday, November 4. Lots of fab items; gorgeous jewelry; and did I mention food? Come say hi!

Who else has not yet started decorating for Hallowe'en? It's going to be a mad rush today to get the yard set up. But at least we have goodies and with luck there will be some left for the kiddos when they come knocking at the door!

This was a fun book launch - film clips, trains, Cary Grant (!), discussion about pro wrestlers, …. Plus the book is fabulous!

Primarily crepuscular (active at dusk and dawn) during warmer months, prairie dogs spend hot days sleeping and are usually active above ground in the morning and evening. In cool or overcast weather, prairie dogs may remain above ground all day. Rain will often drive them to retreat underground. Same. We know what you’re thinking. “How did you get this photo of me?”

If you do get dressed (Wow, that shirt? Sorry, that’s not helpful, is it?) head out to a park. Make it your fun day! There’s probably one closer than you think. Baby steps. Visit www.nps.gov to find a park, activity, or an event that barks to you!

Lunch on Friday was here - on the wharf in Steveston. A perfect day to get together with friends - one of whom I haven't seen in person since pre-pandemic. Of course we ate seafood!!

There's frost on the roof and the deck. Time to plant the garlic for next year. Also time to stock up on hot chocolate, apple cider, and cinnamon sticks. And dig out the hummingbird feeder heaters! Fall has officiallly arrived.

another amazing baseball game last night! Unfortunately the World Series doesn't start until Friday, so I guess I will have to stop procrastinating and write.
