Your first official game poster of the year is ready and it will come with Breaking News regarding the season opener for the Highland Hornets Football team. The Hornets are opting out of their first game vs Eldorado citing safety concerns. We have learned that the Hornets have had concerns with the high number of opponents in a higher classification and voiced there concerns as early as last September. This years out of district schedule for the Class 5A Hornets consists of 5 out of the first 6 games against Class 6A opponents. Coach Philip Lovato Jr, working with a very limited roster that includes only 4 seniors, several ineligible players and a majority underclassman, has made this decision because of safety concerns for his younger players. I am told that the Administration at Highland, along with players and parents, all had a say in this decision. We have also learned that Principal Harris, along with APS Associate Superintendent Gene Saavedra and Chief Operations Officer Dr. Gabriella Duran Blakey are working out a deal that would give Highland the opportunity to add a game during their bye week and also replace one of the other 6A opponents with a Class 5A opponent. I have also learned that these discussions have led to possible changes within APS regarding scheduling moving forward. APS is looking to train coaches in September and implement soon after, the policy for allowing ADs and coaches to build their own schedules, opening the door to a world of possibilities and matchups statewide. It will allow programs like Highland, who are rebuilding, to plan for a more balanced schedule within their own classification. It also still gives those schools looking for better competition in strength of schedule, the opportunity to seek out quality opponents. This is a very fluid situation with a a lot of information flowing. I will report more on the situation as I receive it.
