Hereās a fun throwback! I pulled out these old film shots from my 2011-2013 archives; I used to experiment a lot more with film ten years ago. I spy developer splattering, solarization, negative scratching, and even some double exposures hiding in there between the regular stuff. Film can be very fun! My favorite part is always rolling it in the dark though. š·šļø
We recently visited our friends at North Arabians to do some black backgrounds. As always, they were a pleasure to work with and so beautifully turned out. Since we have too many favorites to share in one post, here's just a few highlights!

We have a mounted archery demo at UC Davis in a few months, so my friend wanted some promotional shots in my Persian outfit. I am more than happy to oblige!

Itās always a great time taking photos of Andrea Fraire Performance Horses and the horses she starts! Check out this cool little mare showing off what sheās learned.
Some of these photos were taken in more recent years than others, but I think about them all often. The world has since lost several more wonderful animals, many of which I was privileged to photograph at one point or another in their lives. Thatās had me reflecting quite a bit. Iāve decided to share some of those thoughts about my āside hustle.ā Theyāre a bit long and winding, but they do say a photo is worth a thousand words.
To the outside eye, itās just a photo. A photo is a bit like magic though; the closer you look, the less you really see. After all, there is so much more to that photograph than whatās within the edge of the frame. I am there for only a moment, and yet that moment lasts forever for both of us. I am not in front of the lens, but I am behind it. You donāt ever see me in the shot, but I am there nonetheless. I am often asked if I remember that time when I took pictures of someone, their pet, their event, their family. The answer is always yes, for every single moment and for every single shot.
I am there at the highest of their highs and the lowest of their lows. I celebrate othersā victories as my own, commemorating the sweetness of that moment so that it might be shared and savored forever. On the worst day, I am still there; I try to somehow turn the chaff into cream and make folks look their best even when they feel stuck in the mud. I do my best to highlight the silver lining on the raincloudāhelp remember the good among the bad.
The sun is low, after a long, hot day. Someoneās always the last in the order of go at the event, and everyone else is in a bustle to leave. Most already have done. Still, Iām there as long as they are. I will not leave until theyāthe very last oneācross that line or jump the last jump; I always celebrate from behind my camera with them as they do.
Whether someoneās reached a milestone achievement or is just starting out, Iām there to commemorate the journey. A professional headshot for the article theyāve been asked to write. A photo celebrating graduation to greater things. A picture to showcase the new business, only just now taking off. Iām frequently a stranger on their attendance list, at first there to work but later leave as a friend. I get to witness those moments and have the pleasure of, if briefly, living in a hundred other lives than just my one.
But sometimes we cross paths not in the bustle of competition or the spotlight of an achievement. Sometimes itās in the more solemn moments that we meet. Someoneās beloved pet is so much more grey than they used to be, but still loved. So loved. When they have to say goodbye, I drop everything to be with them as soon as I can. That is the most important place for either of us to be that day. I do my best to soothe the impending hurt with a cherished last memory. I take twice as many photos and back them up twice as many times, keenly aware of the heavy responsibility Iām entrustedā¦ but I also listen. We laugh about the good times, because those are whatās going to linger after the bad ones fade. Sometimes I get to come a few weeks or months before, and sometimes I come on the day itself. Either way, we only have this small time together, and somehow I have to fit a lifetime into it. Into just a photo or two. Often this last meeting is the first for us, but itās never fleeting. The end of a chapter is a chapter nonetheless, and I carry it with me even long after stepping away.
They may say a photo is worth a thousand words, yet I cannot help but wonder how anyone thinks that a thousand words is enough to describe everything in even a single shot. All the words in the world would not be enough, and neither are the ones written here. I think sometimes photographers get caught up in business side or the technique of it all; we forget to look beyond our own lens. Folksā gotta make a living. Still, the thing is, Iām so lucky to get to live in these passing moments, and each one is special to me. Sometimes those moments are as small as 1/2000th of a second or less! Even then, it isnāt actually about me and the photos Iām taking at all, but the moments themselves. Itās about the people and the animals that let me into their livesāeach one something precious.
Iām eternally grateful for the faces and memories that Iāve met and captured, and I really look forward to the many more yet to come. Photography might be āa luxury,ā but really itās so much more than that. Hereās to the paths thatāve crossed mine, each special in their own way. Thank you for letting me share in your animalsā stories and be a part of their lives.
Happy holidays and merry Christmas to all of our friends and family out there. It's been wonderful to connect up with so many amazing people and animals this year from behind the lens.
Here's a few more holiday photos that I got to do this year. Composite photos always are an exciting challenge and a lot of fun for me--especially when they get to include dogs, cats, or other furry friends. I had a really great time making this Christmas card vision come true. Thanks Justine and family for trusting me with this one! I'm happy to finally share it with everyone else, and I'm also so grateful for the many folks who continue to have me out to do fun projects like this one. Looking forward to another year of good photos and good friends. See you all out there in 2023!
We're feeling the holiday spirit on this end for sure. Here's a quick peek at just a few of the lovely faces and festive photo fun I've worked on this year. More to come soon!
Decided to have a little more fun with these photos. Who doesn't love a painted background?
Itās always a good time photographing Andrea Fraire Performance Horses and the young horses she gets to work with š
It was such fun to do more photos and a holiday shoot for this handsome chap. Peter is always such a pleasure to be around. Hereās hoping that next time heās in front of the camera is to celebrate having found his new home. š¤š Heās currently available through CANTER California!
Peterās holiday photos are in! Our friend and photographer, Cassidy at CC Photography, got us these photos back within less than 24 hours (actually, within less than 12 hours!). We are so thankful to her for capturing our most eligible bachelor and in his holiday best.
Peter is a 2014 16.1hh thoroughbred gelding looking for his forever home. Peter is extremely kind and constantly impresses our volunteers with his willingness to please. He currently goes nicely w/t/c and is schooling lead changes and lateral work. Peter has recently been to a handful of schooling shows, a clinic, and on a trail ride at Folsom Lake.
We know his perfect person is out there somewhere! Help us find Peter a home for the holidays by sharing this post or tagging any friends you think may be interested in adopting our handsome guy. Located in Davis, CA.
All CANTER CA-owned horses ā including those coming soon to qualified homes ā will have 20% off their adoption fees if adopted on or prior to Dec 31st, 2022.
Hi all! Happy December and various upcoming holidays. Iāve decided to offer some āminiā sessions with a catch. I hope this helps those who are trying to sort out gifts for the upcoming holidays. :)
What is a mini session? USUALLY, a mini session is marketed as a smaller package at a discounted rate. In this case, for these sessions, I will be offering a package of 3 edited and high res digital natural background photos.
If youāre still reading, you may be wondering: whatās the catch? Well, these sessions will be free. Yesāfree. If you would like to tip to offset gas etc, I would greatly appreciate any amount that youāre comfortable with. If you cannot or would not like to, thatās fine too. Zero questions will be asked, and I will be showing up with zero expectations. Due to that, I can unfortunately only offer a limited number of these sessions within 30 minutes travel of Davis (95616) for now. I will try to fit in as many as I can, but please forgive me in advance if these slots fill up. For the mini sessions, it does not have to be horses/pets. I can also photograph people or anything else under the sun. Portraiture or action. Serious or silly. I will be offering to do these sessions between December 9th - 23rd. After the holidays, I will be going back to my usual packages/rates and would happy to book more sessions then. Please reach out if these mini sessions sound like something you would like to pursue, or if youād like to get on the books for a full session soon instead.

Announcing June availability for photos!
From now until the end of June, I will be available for photography in and around the Davis and Sacramento area. If you're out of my range, feel free to give me a holler. I can let you know when I'll be there next.
As usual, there will be plenty of slots open for black background photography for horses, pets, and people. These shots give an awesome fine art feel without the hassle of a studio session or tarp backdrops/etc. The package includes 3 high resolution photos for $80, with group discounts available.
I am also opening up sessions for other types of photography! I am happy to do more traditional portraiture, professional headshots, or fun and casual photoshoots also. Prices for these types of sessions are flexible, and I'm happy to make a plan that accommodates both your photo hopes and your wallet needs. Loving Isley and his handsome self! Can't wait to do some more photos of this guy soon as he continues training to be the coolest horse ever.
Heās not trying to brag. š thank you so much for your beautiful photography and editing work.
Woodland Stallion Station SAHJA photo update!!
All unedited proofs, including the hunter rounds, are now live. The link is down below. If you can't find yourself, take a look at the folder of unsorted riders! Many apologies, but there were a few that I could not make out the numbers for. We were also only able to shoot hunter rounds until 3:30PM but should have photos of all the jumpers.
As another heads up... We had absolutely obscene entries this weekend! In the interest of getting proofs up asap, I bypassed the usual pre-editing that I do. That means that these bad boys are absolutely untouched right now--not even cropped in yet! Please know that any photos you purchase will be edited and touched up from their current proof form.
Check out your proofs on our site: https://cassidycooper.smugmug.com/

Many apologies, but there were three riders that I could not make out the numbers for. As another heads up... Hunters... your proofs will go up soon! I'm working hard on them, and they should be up near the end of the weekend. Stay tuned for the next update.
