WOODBURY -

The number of children dying of opioid overdoses has more than tripled in the past two decades, according to a new report from the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The report found that nearly 9,000 pediatric deaths from 1999 through 2016 were from opioid poisoning.

Nearly 7 percent of those deaths were children age 4 or younger.

Addiction expert Steven Chassman, of the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, says he's been seeing an increase locally as well. He calls the numbers "indicative of the public health crisis we're seeing" and adds that there needs to be more education.

Krista Bertschi, of Coram, lost her son Anthony to an overdose in January 2017. She says change also needs to happen within the health insurance system in order to reverse the trend.

Researchers say there's no end in sight until legislators, public health officials and parents tackle the crisis that is "pediatric-specific and family-centered."

Police: K*K flyers littered along Hampton Bays street

When most people think of white supremacists, they think of actions like these that are meant to make people of color fear for their lives. While these type of actions must be directly confronted and denied a platform, we must also remember that racism has seeped deep into the very rules that run our system.

They have even changed the terminology so that they are very hard to be pointed out and confronted. For example, wide support of "law and order" seems to not be racist on the surface. However when a person of color breaks the law, law enforcement and the judicial system talk about how they broke the "letter of the law" and must be punished to the fullest extent. While when a white person breaks the law, they only talk about the "spirit of the law" and how they should be let go or only given the minimal sentence.

Piecemeal incremental change may feel cathartic but moves at a snail's pace compared to how fast racism can adapt and transform into new policies. We can only change this with a complete radical revolution to our economic and judicial system that does not resemble the current one.

Gentrification is Violence

There are many different levels to gentrification. This includes the owners of the buildings as well as those that are renting or buying these places. Colonized and indigenous people as well as white poor folks are being forced out of their homes due to rising rent and housing costs. This is very visible on Long Island.

Fidel Castro, the greatest revolutionary and socialist Latin American leader of all times, died a day like today, November 25, 2016. He inspired many people to care about others who have less, to place humanity above greed and not to fear to fight those who are more powerful, and he did this for more than fifty years, not only leading the Cuban revolution but also having the strength of character to maintain its purpose. His actions, always true to his words, earned Fidel Castro the respect and admiration of millions throughout the world.

One of the great achievements of Fidel Castro and the Cuban Revolution is to have created a system of social protection that is unanimously considered as the example to be followed for the nations of the Third World, universalizing access to health, education, culture, housing, safety, sport, and recreation:
- A literacy rate of more than 99%
- Cuban students have the best academic results in Latin America in all subjects
- Cuba devotes about 14% of its budget to education
- All careers are universal and free for all Cubans
- Life expectancy is about 80 years
- The infant mortality rate is 4.6 per thousand
- It is the only country in Latin America and the Third World that has eradicated child malnutrition
- It is the first country in the world to have eliminated mother-to-child transmission of the AIDS virus.

Haydee Tamara Bunke Bider, better known as Tamara Bunke or Tania the Guerrilla, was born on this day in 1937. Born to German communists who fled to Argentina when the N***s came to power, she eventually met Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara. She began living in Cuba in 1961, and sought out revolutionary work such as teaching and assisting with building homes and schools.

Eventually she was tasked with joining Che Guevara in his Bolivian insurgency, due to her social skills and other useful abilities. She worked as a spy gaining intelligence on the Bolivarian elite, and even gained the attention of the Bolivarian president. She used her position to send radio messages to Che in the jungles as well as back to Fidel Castro in Havana. However, eventually her cover was blown and she had to join Che in the mountains. She was the only woman on this mission.

She was killed by Bolivarian Army Rangers (assisted by the CIA) on August 31st, 1967. She was shot while attempting to cross a river with other guerrillas.

When Fidel Castro learned of her death, he declared her a national hero. Her remains are in the Che Guevara mausoleum in the city of Santa Clara in Cuba. She was also a folk legend in East Germany, with several youth clubs named after her.

Working Class History

On this day, 19 November 1915, Joe Hill, Swedish-American Industrial Workers of the World union member and songwriter was executed by firing squad for a murder he did not commit. During his life, Hill wrote many songs such as 'There is Power in a Union', 'Casey Jones - the Union Scab' and 'The Preacher and the Slave' (where the saying 'pie in the sky' comes from). In his final letter to IWW leader Bill Haywood he wrote: "Goodbye Bill. I die like a true blue rebel. Don't waste any time in mourning. Organize."
