The Correct Elevation — The Bosphorus Review Of Books 13/07/2020

The Correct Elevation — The Bosphorus Review Of Books I’m hitchhiking on I-84 West. I made a ludicrous drunken twenty-dollar bet with my old friend Larry. We’d served together in the Navy on the USS Miller and often got together to reminisce. I wagered I’d beat him to Preston’s Bar in Middletown, NY, my thumb versus his vintage VW Karmann Ghia ...

Main Street Bridge, Pawtucket, RI

As a boy
spitting off
the Main St. Bridge
I never knew
it was where mobs
watched drunken
Sam Patch
dive off textile mills
into the Blackstone
one-hundred-twenty
some odd years before.
Man, he went on
to conquer
Niagara Falls!
When a Genesee leap
took his life
someone should
have renamed
the Pawtucket span
for him.
I could have
used another dream
to back up Fenway Park
and Boston Garden
while working
those textile mills
that bored
Sam’s living hell
out of him and
into the rivers.
