Meet Theo 🤍 born on January 29th, 2021; he was 8lbs 3oz and 20 inches long. He came three weeks early and stole our hearts, as well as the entirety of our time and energy. He is pure joy, the funniest six-month-old I’ve ever known, remarkably handsome, incredibly brave, and way more social than Matt and I combined.

Theo was born with a unilateral cleft lip and a bilateral cleft palate. His cleft journey has been difficult; full of highs and lows, but every piece has been surpassed by the sheer delight he is. When we tallied it up, we discovered that he has travelled for 1/6th of his entire life to complete his NAM treatment (you can find out more about that on my personal page, .denise). I cannot believe how resilient he is.

Theo will need several surgeries to repair his cleft, and his first one is coming up next week, August 18th. (Again, you can follow along on my personal page for more info about it.)

Aside from showing off my adorable blue-eyed baby, I wanted to let you know: After Theo has recovered from surgery, I plan to begin a gentle restart of Astrid+Co! Follow our family’s journey at .denise, and keep watching here for the day we begin again 🤍

We’ve been quiet lately. After moving to Oregon, we conceived our first baby—a boy, coming February 2021 ♡

Truthfully our journey has been difficult. We didn’t struggle with fertility, for which we are endlessly grateful! But this pregnancy has not been easy on us. My body is not coping well, which has meant a lot of days resting and many of my day to day tasks falling to Matt, who has been working two jobs this year.

In full disclosure, it has also been really emotionally and mentally taxing on us. We found out at 20 weeks that our son, Theo, will be born with an isolated unilateral cleft lip and palate. We love him fiercely, and we have no doubt whatsoever that he is perfectly and wonderfully made and chosen just for us—exactly who our family needs. But as you can imagine, the toll of processing that discovery and everything his journey will entail has been pretty high.

The dream is still to grow this page one day, and to start making and selling clean skincare again. But our family’s season shifted dramatically at that October ultrasound, and we are more than content to commit all of our resources and energy to our baby’s needs for the time being.

Much love to you all as we head into this new year. I pray you feel the overwhelming peace of the Lord in it.

I know we’ve been quiet these last several weeks, but we are here and healthy! I have been adjusting to a new city, a new job, and a new world quarantine—and also homemaking every spare second.

Setting up our first home in the middle of a pandemic is not *exactly* the way I imagined this season playing out, but the Lord has been so faithful and we are safe, sound and cozy. Homemaking has kept me sane these last few weeks and I’m thankful for the timing of our move.

Are you all healthy? What have you been doing to keep your sanity while we adjust to this unexpected world-wide season?

Only one more day until the weekend!

I don't know about where you live, but where we live it's slotted to be near the 60's and I'm not mad about it.

Here's something that absolutely changed my life: buying a daily planner. Every week I sit down and schedule out the following Monday-Saturday in this order:
1) I block out Sabbath and add Saturday dates with Matt.
2) I block out my work hours.
3) I write in set appointments.
4) I write in important tasks, urgent ones on Monday/Tuesday, non-urgent on any other day with a slot.
5) I double check that I have down time every day, and rearrange anything possible to make sure I do.

One of my biggest stress triggers is feeling like I have no extra time and feeling like I'm going to forget something important because I have so many things to concentrate on. Matt took me to the store one day and made me pick out a tangible paper planner, and I haven't been stressed about my schedule or forgetting an important task since! Thanks, babe ♡

Have you tried using a daily planner?

I love starting my week with a facemask. I get the whole "Self-care Saturday" thing, but is there anything better than starting a fresh week with a few minutes of relaxing downtime and a fresh face? I certainly don't think so ;)

I'd like to take today to talk about this selfless man. He loves me so well, always ready to make me coffee in the morning, lunch on a work day, or to get over his dislike of feet to massage mine after a long day of walking. He has taught me what "loving on purpose" means through his intentional, selfless actions.

Tag someone you're thankful for who loves you intentionally ♡

Tag a friend you keep close because they add some sunshine to your life☀️

We've had a lot of change the last 18 months--so many people we got to be close to for a moment and then had to leave. But we have had some of the most wonderful friends in every city, and it's so very true here as well.

Who else loves road trips? 🙋🏼‍♀️

I feel like we have spent 100 hours in the car over the last two weeks 😂 we love switching between music and podcasts to keep ourselves entertained (and awake). music has basically kept us alive this week ✨

What are your favorite road trip tunes?

We are moving out of Michigan today!!! And then packing up everything we have in storage in California, and moving THAT to Oregon. Which means a jam-packed week. This sign is how I feel about approaching this move.

Have you moved recently? What are your moving tips??

Our last Sabbath in Michigan for now--next week Sabbath will start at a new church, in a new state, surrounded by new people we are excited to get to know. Sabbath is about rest and connection, and today we are reflecting on how it has looked over this year, and how it will look in the next season.

What do you envision for Sabbath?

This week everything feels a little overwhelming. Mental health is something I am very passionate about, and I learn more every day about how to keep myself mentally healthy. As we face the move, Matt keeps reminding me to take a moment to just be. To breathe. To enjoy the little things.

Moving or not, you deserve to do the same right now. ♡

I'm very often am a contradiction in terms--for instance, I love the snow and even being out in the snow, but I hate the cold. I love health and wellness, but in my heart of hearts I also love tangy, sugary candy. I love traveling and exploring new places, but I am a full-blown homebody and would probably be content to spend 90% of my life locked inside my house with my plants 🤷🏼‍♀️

I can't explain how these things work together, but they mysteriously do and they form something unique and precious--ME, exactly as I was created. I've learned to embrace and love my quirks and contradictions, which I think is a process for all of us.

Tell me something quirky and wonderful about YOU! -->

Timeline photos 17/02/2020

I'm going to remind myself of this every day this week. Why? Because it's an easy temptation to compare and compete these days. Everyone displays the best side of their life on social media (even if they also include some of the hard side), and everyone else seems to have a thriving "fill in the blank" (family, career, marriage, business, ministry, blog, etc).

So here's a little Monday reminder as you start your week: A rising tide lifts everyone's boats. That person's healthy, thriving "fill in the blank" helps make a way for YOU to build one, too! And that's something I love about community--we can all help each other thrive as we learn to thrive ourselves.

What's something you've learned that you think would help other people thrive?

Happy Sabbath ✨

I take notes from Ginnie Marigold every day about how to rest: Find somewhere cozy and beautiful ✔️ Forget all pressures ✔️ Ignore all distractions ✔️ Cat nap all day ✔️

How are you resting today?

We were built for connection ♡ single, mingling, dating, married, kids or no kids; it's true in every season of the soul, regardless of what it looks like. We were born to love and be loved.

It's Valentine's Day--a day which is precious to some, and triggering for others. Today I would like to remind you all of something beautiful: Valentine's Day originated as a day to honor the memory of Christian martyr St. Valentine. There are so many legends that surround this holiday, but the foundation of it is remembering a Saint who was so overcome by the love of our Savior that he was willing to die rather than renounce Him. Whatever season of life you are in today, I want to encourage you to take some time today to remember the One who loved you first, and will love you most through all eternity, Jesus Christ. Remember the costly gift of salvation and restoration He provided and offers freely, and be saturated and satisfied in His love today. You were built for communion with Him; and then for connection with those around you.

In light of His love for us, we love those around us. So lavish some love on those around you this Valentine's Day; whether it be your spouse, your best friend, your small group, your neighbor, your grandma, or your child. Remind them of the love the Savior has for them, and the love you have for them. Let's restore the standard of love which this holiday was founded to commemorate--the sacrificial love of our Savior, which in turn inspires sacrificial love in us.

Happy Valentine's Day ♡ you are more loved than you can comprehend.
