11 years ago I became a mama. I want to be honest. My expectations for how I would feel and be as a mother were very low. I was never what anyone would describe as naturally maternal. I was nervous the whole pregnancy.

But at 2:42 AM on November 10, 2012, Stella came into the world a couple weeks early and teeny tiny weighing just under 5 lbs. I remember the nurse swaddled her in a blanket and handed her to me as I was ready to be wheeled up to my room. I looked down at my wide-eyes baby burrito and said to the nurse “I get to keep her?” The nurse said, “No, honey, you HAVE to keep her.”

My heart fluttered. I looked into Stella’s eyes and felt I had known her soul forever. I know without a doubt our souls have traveled together many lives before this one. I had never known a love like I felt in that moment.

Stella is a Bubby trapped inside the body of a young girl. She has always been wise beyond her years, spilling out the best pieces of life advice, and profound commentary on whatever may be happening. And just when we least expect it from our pensive little lady, she surprises us with her ridiculous quirky antics. She has never cared what anyone thought and always confidently marched to the beat of her own drum. Stella is never afraid to call out wrong actions, constantly yelling at me to stop gossiping or discipline me for my potty mouth. I often forget who the mother is in our relationship.

This past year Stella truly transformed from a little girl to a young woman and it’s been oh so bittersweet. Not only is she already wearing a bigger shoe size than I do, her maturity and drive to make a positive impact in the world have reached new heights.

Stella, I am so blessed to be your mommy. I learn from you every day. You are a gift to our family and to the world.

I write this with tears streaming down my face. It’s hard to imagine these photos were taken exactly 5 weeks ago. We had just cut Ollie’s hair overlooking the Kotel and Ira took Ollie down to kiss the wall and pray. How different the world was just 35 days ago.

We were filled with the magical feelings of nachas, simcha, and bracha on this day we had been yearning for since Ollie was just a prayer, before his miraculous existence came to be.

The miracle of Ollie’s life showed us G-d’s greatness. They say every child is a miracle, but there was no doctor who could explain his survival in utero. We celebrated our miracle in our land of miracles.

G-d, we know what you are capable of. We beg you for the protection of the Jewish people and of the land You promised to us thousands of years ago. We, your children, beg You to keep us safe and we promise to keep You close and remember Your greatness.

Mama Rochel 🙏🏼

Today I visited our holy matriarch, Rachel Imeinu’s, final resting place for the first time, thanks to my spiritual guide .shaer, who insisted on bringing me here.

The holy tomb is fortified like a bunker and heavily guarded to prevent destruction and terrorism. The contrast of the women and men pouring their hearts out in tear filled prayers, with the armed soldiers surrounding, shows an accurate picture of the Jewish people throughout our history. We have been constantly forced to fight for our spiritual identity and guard our connection to G-d.

It is said that our loving mother, Rachel, cries out to G-d on behalf of all of the Children of Israel who pray at this site. I poured my heart out in my prayers for myself and my family and I said a prayer for all of us that we should have the strength to continue to fight the hate that rages against us but also that we should be blessed with soft hearts, like Mama Rochel’s, that always lead with love. 🙏🏼

Thank you to Stella, who always inspires me with her heartfelt prayers, for praying alongside me this entire holiday season and today with our holy mother.
