During World War II (1939-1945), the Battle of Normandy, which lasted from June 1944 to August 1944, resulted in the Allied liberation of Western Europe from N**i Germany’s control. Codenamed Operation Overlord, the battle began on June 6, 1944, also known as D-Day, when some 156,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast of France’s Normandy region. The invasion was one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history and required extensive planning. Prior to D-Day, the Allies conducted a large-scale deception campaign designed to mislead the Germans about the intended invasion target. By late August 1944, all of northern France had been liberated, and by the following spring the Allies had defeated the Germans. The Normandy landings have been called the beginning of the end of war in Europe. ™

On this day in U.S. Army SF history......02 Nov 2016, Boz Qandahari Village, Kunduz Province Afghanistan, an all night-long battle for survival for the men of ODA 0224 as 10 Green Berets, 2 American support elements, and a small partner force of Afghan soldiers fought off wave after wave of fortified and determined Taliban insurgents while trying to escape a village that had suddenly become an angry hornet’s nest. The night’s brutal fighting resulted in approximately a third of the 59-man force suffering casualties, including two Green Berets killed in action. Yet, despite pain and loss, the men of ODA 0224 rose to the occasion and showed a level of heroism that was nothing short of extraordinary.

On 03 Oct, 1993 at 1350 hours, the most famous mission of Operation Gothic Serpent commenced in an effort go capture the notorious warlord Mohammed Farrah Aidid. "Irene," launched Task Force Ranger into Mogadishu, Somalia. An operation that should have only taken a couple of hours turned into a nearly 17 hour fight for the lives of Task Force Ranger. On Oct 4th after the smoke cleared, 19 American service members were killed, 73 wounded, and two Black Hawk helicopters, Super 61 and Super 64, were shot down. Two Delta Operators MSG Gary Gordon and SFC Randy Shughart were inserted to provide cover and support for the downed crew of Super 64, and found Micharl Durant still alive and fighting. Greatly outnumbered and knowing there was no hope to survive , these two men gave their lives in the defense of their fellow service members. For their actions that day, they were posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
The estimated for the Samali militiamen killed and wounded range from a couple of hundred dead and a couple of thousand wounded.
The courage actions of those men on the ground stopped being about capturing a high value target, and became a rescue mission for each other.
