Ghost fungi spotted in Bayside 👻🍄
The cooler months, and a turn of the season, bring about the fruiting of many fungi species.
A Bushland Crew member recently took a walk through George Street Reserve and noticed Ghost Fungi (Omphalotus nidiformis) start to pop up on some of the Coast Tea Tree (Leptospermum laevigatum).
Primarily found in southern Australia, this species of fungi has an amazing bioluminescence at night.
If the bioluminescence is strong enough and the surrounding environment dark enough, you can see a white glow with the naked eye.

Soo beautiful. Imogen is Underwater, your photography is awesome.
After diving last night, I fell asleep thinking about this tiny little fish and it's impressive camouflage. This Southern Pygmy Leatherjacket is approximately 2.5cm long and is tucked in neatly against its doppelgänger, a Ladder Ascidian.

I love the tree planting we are doing in Bayside.
During tree planting season last year (April - November), we planted 1364 trees across Bayside🌳
This includes:
• 807 Indigenous natives
• 151 Sand belt region Indigenous natives
• 204 non-Indigenous natives
• 203 Exotics
Together, we're nurturing our environment, preserving biodiversity, and enhancing the natural beauty of our community by continuing to plant seeds of sustainability for a greener, healthier future.

This article talks to what it can be like in local government. My experience has been the polar opposite. I have found Bayside City Council to be a brilliant Council to be part of.
Sacked and under scrutiny: What’s behind Victoria’s council chaos The number of councils under formal scrutiny – or even sacked – by the state government is piling up. What is going on?
Please contribute- your feed is important.

A painful and powerful sculpture…
The sculpture 'A Delicate Balance' has been installed in the median strip on Station St in Sandringham 🐢🌏
This sculpture, created by artist Bernie O'Gorman, is part of a Placemaking program of initiatives for the Sandringham Activity Centre and depicts the reliance of the turtle and earth on humans for balance and survival.
While adding beauty to the space, the artwork will also help bring energy and maximize the use of the area, benefiting the local community.
Supported by Sandy Street Art Project Inc, Sandy Village and Bayside City Council, the artwork will provide visitors with an opportunity to reflect on connections between humankind and the natural world.
Bernie O’Gorman has said the inspiration for the 20-year-old sculpture came from humanity’s encroachment on the natural world.
“I saw a documentary about turtles on an island in Australia,” said O’Gorman. “They were mining on the island, and the turtles were falling on their backs and couldn’t access the sea, it was one of their nesting islands.
“It’s probably more relevant now than it was 20 years ago, which is a bit sad really. I think we’ve made inroads, we’re improving, but there’s still a long way to go as getting the balance right.
“I think Sandringham is the best location the sculpture has ever been in; it feels like it belongs there.” ❤️
The sculpture is on loan from the artist for a 12 month period.

Bayside City Council’s support for The Voice to Parliament began in 2021 when we unanimously supported the Uluru Statement from the Heart https://ulurustatement.org/the-statement/
We confirmed our commitment to supporting the Voice to Parliament earlier this year.
The Voice to Parliament will be a defining moment in our nation’s history and long overdue to my mind. Given it’s significanceI am taking the time to read this awesome book. I commend it as an elegantly crystallised account if where we stand as a nation.
Congratulations to Cr Hanna El Mouallem- our new mayor! And who is deputy mayor? Me!
This is what I was aiming for with my Butterfly Friendly Bayside Notice of Motion a year or so ago. I’m not done yet.
Also, this is exactly what we are doing in the wildflower meadow in the Yallukit Willam Nature Reserve.
Melbourne tried to bring butterflies back to the CBD. It worked Not just butterflies, but bees too. Now the city is expanding its trial putting in more understory plants to see if birds will come back too.
One of the most edifying parts of being a Bayside City Councillor is the good will between all seven of us despite a diversity of beliefs. Have a read.
It seems that faith is not only unacceptable, but now must be cancelled If Andrew Thorburn is guilty by association with City on a Hill, why is Daniel Andrews not guilty by association with the Catholic Church?
It was an honour to meet the federal environment minister, Tanya Pliberseck during her visit to the Yallukit Willam Nature Teserve yesterday.
The Queen has died… long love the King….very sad day 😞
Queen Elizabeth II has died. She was 96 The new King Charles III said the death of his beloved Mother was “a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family”.
Today we met with the minister for agriculture, Murry Watts. Our key message was around the importance of wildlife conservation and we particularly wanted to raise the issue of our native wildlife being killed by rat poisons, known as SGARS. Still a work in progress but a good start.
Local government is actually super fun and incredibly rewarding.
We are at the 2022 Australian Local Government National General Assembly. We just met Tracey Roberts MP, member for Pearce and heard her speak. She is hilarious, has a great heart. It’s great to meet future, inspiring leaders.
