Héctor Nájera emphasized the consensual deprivation and multidimensional poverty measurement in Latin America by discussing the UBN approach.
He defines marginality, which measures people being denied basic necessities in specific low-income neighborhood areas.
He defines poverty, which measures household-level refusal of resources.
"Marginality and poverty are relatively the same thing. When you see the concept and the data of both, they are the same problem with a quantity of people suffering from low income."
Joanna Mack spoke knowledgeably about the socially perceived necessities for people living in poverty and the importance of providing these necessities.
Her charts and research was profound in displaying the realities of children living in these specific countries: UK, Tonga, and Uganda. Given the percentages of these countries alone, represent all children in every country around the world.
Mack states that "The condensed chart speaks for children around the world. Everyone should be able to participate in the society in which they live."
Today, we discussed the importance of eradicating poverty at the Improving Child and Family Poverty Measurement event.
Alberto Minujin, Equity for Children's Founding Executive Director, introduced today's event by discussing the methodology and analysis of the multidimensional child and family poverty project.
Minujin referenced Peter Townsend and the theory of relative deprivation. He explains how poverty ha always been questioned as what it is and how to prevent it.
"Poverty is an issue for the people suffering poverty and for the society in general."
The discussion poses the question: Why measuring child and family poverty matters? Minujin lists the following reasons:
-Global comparability gives us the measurements to develop reliable poverty statistics.
-Informed policy-making will show us the data to make informed decisions and anti-poverty policies.
-Targetting resources helps us attain all necessary aid to distribute in support of all identifying populations affected by poverty.
"Eradicating poverty is not just a goal, it's a necessity to make the world better."
As the 2023 Spring semester comes to a close, we wanted to
congratulate Alberto Minujin on his final semester teaching the thought-provoking graduate course, "Children's Rights, Urban Poverty, and Inequality" through the Studley Graduate Program in International Affairs
His expertise and dedication have made a significant impact on the students who have had the privilege to participate in this captivating class. Under Minujin's guidance, this unique course has provided students with a comprehensive understanding of the pressing issues faced by children, adolescents, and families living in poverty.
The interconnected tracks have allowed participants to delve into conceptual frameworks, methodological approaches, and relevant social policies aimed at combating urban poverty and exclusion, with a particular focus on children and adolescents. The depth and breadth of knowledge the students have gained through this course is invaluable.
Beyond theoretical knowledge, this course has challenged students to engage in a practical projects in New York City. The exploration of the inspiring work carried out by the non-governmental organization A Chance In Life has served as a compelling case study, shedding light on the efforts dedicated to combating poverty among adolescents in the North Shore of Staten Island. This practical application of learning has deepened students understanding and fostered a sense of responsibility to address these pressing social issues.
We thank you again, Alberto Minujin, for a wonderful course that empowered students to raise awareness.

We are proud to inform you that the Spencer Educational Foundation, Inc. awarded us a grant to carry out the project "Latinx Women and Families in Queens: Voice and Action".
Equity for Children will collaborate with members of Voces Latinas and the StoryCenter to empower the people of this community. Together, we’ll identify existing barriers that deprive the Latinx community of basic services and access to traditional education. And we’ll fight to eradicate the violence this community is vulnerable to.
Adults of the LGBTQ+ community and undocumented adults residing in Queens will participate as storytellers and share their impactful experiences, within the context of group support. People of the Latinx population will discuss how existing structural dynamics have made them victims to discrimination including gender bias, racism, and economic marginalization.
These organizations will collectively promote a policy reform through community-based, action oriented advocacy. Voces Latina will use discussions and videos for trainings in mobilizing their community in the fight for Latinx empowerment.
Thank you again to The Spencer Foundation for granting us the opportunity to give the Latinx Community of Queens a voice!

Over the course of 2021, Equity For Children hosted a series of webinars and partnered with children’s health organizations to spread awareness of multidimensional poverty across Latin America. The webinars highlighted three important conversations: integral health, children, and the pandemic. Journalists and experts partook in discussion regarding the pandemic. affected over 100 million children across Latin America that are currently living in unsafe and unhealthy conditions. The experts referred to this as a “double pandemic” due to the deterioration of child health and spread of inequality. Experts noticed an algorithm connected to the social environment of children and adolescents. In addition, other major problems concerning housing deficits, population density, environmental degradation, etc. also affect families facing the effects of this pandemic. It’s an important time to develop solutions to major issues faced by young people and their families. As this pandemic continues to exist, multidimensional poverty factors in as a second pandemic. We’ll continue to use platforms to grant a voice to children in poverty and allow them to overcome this global pandemic.

Resumen Ciclo de Diálogos con Expertos: Infancias y Covid-19 .
On a special episode of Poverty Unpacked, United Nations Special Rapporteur Olivier de Schutter joined in discussion about the inequality of child poverty. The stigma faced by families in poverty directly affects children and adolescents who live in unfair housing, schooling, and working conditions. Schutter recommended ways to break the cycle, through sharing his recent report on the persistence of poverty. In addition, they addressed the biologicalisation of poverty and destruction of inequality. As a first step in the direction to eradicating poverty, The Global Fund for Social Protection will enable low income communities to have full protection in the event of natural disasters or a pandemic crisis. By granting protection to these people who would otherwise be deprived of safety allows them to feel that support. It starts to eliminate that stigma that they have to live with. And it brings hope for humanity.
"People born into poverty and low income households face obstacles that others do not face to the same extent," says UN Special Rapporteur Olivier de Schutter.
