Raku is a Japanese ceramic cooking technique, born in tune with the Zenspirit, able to enhance the harmony of small things and beauty in the simplicity and naturalness of the forms. The Raku is an art at the service of another art, the tea ceremony:a ritual, made with poor objects, centered on the cup that the guests exchanged. Its size was such that it could be contained in the palm of the hand.
The invention of the raku technique is attributed to a Korean craftsman in the production of tiles of the Momoyama era(16th century A.D.), Chojiro,who developed it to facilitate the manufacture of bowls for the tea ceremony (and his patron was Sen no Riky ,was a master of this ceremony). The Japanese term raku means "comfortable, relaxed, pleasant, joie de vivre", and comes from the suburb of Kyoto in which clay was extracted in the sixteenth century. From that moment on it also became the surname and seal of the lineage of ceramicists descended from Chojiro,still active in Japan.
