Devi Chowdhurani - Decoding the look ...
Chapter 3

Detailed research has gone into creating the looks of the film Devi Chowdhurani ( Bandit Queen of Bengal ) in an attempt to capture the era and the mood of the epic story with maximum authenticity.

Jamindar Haraballav Roy :

Haraballav is a wealthy landlord with great wealth and a greater ego. His stature demands a look that immediately evokes awe and respect. His attire has been largely inspired by the look of Raja Rammohan Roy, an accurate representation of the dress and accessories worn by Bengal’s elite during that period. With a distinct Mughal and Nawabi influence, the fabrics are muslin, silk and cotton, hand-woven, organically dyed and painstakingly embroidered. As Haraballav is a dark character, the colour palette is mostly grey, brown and dark chocolate, reflecting his overarching mood in the story.

Sagar :

Sagar is the young, new wife of Brojeswar who is a beautiful, innocent girl oblivious to the dark actions around her till she becomes a part of it. As she is essentially good at heart, with a great love for her husband, Sagar wears a hand-woven ‘Baluchori’ saree with gold embroidered scenes from ‘Geet Govindam’ all over. The base colour of her attire is yellow, the lightest hue of the spectrum, signifying joy, happiness, imagination and hope. As befits a young, wealthy bride of her era, Sagar also wears Jarowa and gold jewelry that have been custom made to suit the period.

Brojeswar Roy

Brojeswar, the son of Haraballav and the husband of Profulla and Sagar. As befits the scion of a great zamindar family of that era, Brojeswar wears a dress of pure Bengal silk, hand-woven and embroidered. His elaborate headwrap, an intrinsic part of high-born Bengali getup during official or ceremonial functions, shows a distinct Mughal or North-Indian influence.

Brojeswar is a pure soul, so the base colour of his attire is primarily in different shades of white, cream and yellow, with red adding a regal touch to it.

Chapter 2

Rangaraj :

Rangaraj is a fierce warrior monk belonged to the Dashnami sect, armed to the teeth. He is mostly bare bodied and wears a short dhoti for easy and swift movement. The vermilion tika on his forehead, the smeared ash on his body and his Rudraksh are the prominent signs of his sect.

Rangaraj carries a tribal bow and arrows in a quiver, all made out of Bamboo and jute which were in abundance in Barendrabhum. He also carries two Indian swords (talwars) for close combat, though the shiny scabbards are covered in jute for camouflage.

On his feet, Rangaraj wears customized shoes and leg protectors made out of jute and tree barks. In that era, Hindu monks didn’t wear any shoes. But the Sannyasi Bandits needed to protect their feet during arduous treks through rough terrain and raids in the jungle and hills.

A prominent scar on his left shoulder marks a deep wound received in an earlier battle. In all, Rangaraj is the complete warrior, brave, resolute, resourceful and ready to lay down his life or take one in an instant.

Nishi :

She is a tribal warrior who was inducted into the team of Sannyasi Bandits, from where she grew to fight side by side with Rangaraj and became a confidant of Devi Chowdhurani. With fierce, burning eyes, Nishi can be brutal in a fight. Her eyes are green, the reason for which is revealed in the film.

She wears a cotton hand-woven saree with jute body armour underneath. Armed to the teeth, Nishi carries a tribal bow and arrows in a quiver, all made out of Bamboo and jute which were in abundance in Barendrabhum. She also carries an Indian sword ( kharga ) and a knife for close combat, though the shiny scabbards are covered in jute for camouflage.

On her feet, Nishi wears customized shoes and leg protectors made out of jute and tree barks. In that era, Hindu monks didn’t wear any shoes and women were forbidden to wear and footwear. But the Sannyasi Bandits needed to protect their feet during arduous treks through rough terrain and raids in the jungle and hills.

Devi Chowdhurani – Decoding the look.. Chapter 1

Devi Chowdhurani:

Detailed research has gone into creating the looks of the film Devi Chowdhurani ( Bandit Queen of Bengal ) in an attempt to capture the era and the mood of the epic story with maximum authenticity.

Devi Chowdhurani, the bandit queen, wears a saree in shades of red and brown. She was inducted into the team of Sanyasi Bandits mentored by Bhavani Pathak who belonged to the Dashnami sect. As they worshipped Shiva and the Mother Goddess through occult, they must have primarily worn red robes and Rudraksha. The entire costume is hand woven and organically dyed. She wears her saree in such a way that would be easier for her to mount a horse or to jump. Women at that time did not wear any blouse, but as she is staying with a team of unknown men and she needed to fight, Devi Chowdhurani wears a cotton men’s Angrakha inside, probably part of an earlier loot by the team.

The Tilak on the forehead of Devi Chowdhurani consists of Haridra ( turmeric ), Swet Chandan ( white sandalwood paste )and Rakta Chandan ( red sandalwood paste ) in accordance to the tradition of this sect. As she is a Hindu married woman, the Snakha, Pola, Noa and Sindur adorns her person as signs of holy matrimony.

Profullo the bride :

As Profullo was married in a wealthy landlord’s family, her bridal attire consists of a hand-woven Benarasi saree with exquisite design and bespoke jewelry in gold, designed to fit the era.

Profullo the abandoned wife :

Profullo was abandoned by her in-laws at a time that coincided with the great Bengal famine of 1770. As she lived in poverty, her look and attire, with a simple saree and no accessories, reflected the hard times.

Had a freak accident while I was wielding a Trident which caused a deep wound to the left upper and lower eye portion of our martial art trainer G**o Prajna Dutta . Thank God that his eyes are safe and continued the training after primary dressing though it was profusely bleeding and had to dress the wounds in between the training sessions.. Take care and stay safe bro...
