**Empowered Women's Health Podcast**
Importance of Skin Checks with Sally Everett, Board Member for the Australian Skin Cancer Foundation
In this episode of the Empowered Women's Health Podcast, we are honoured to welcome a passionate advocate for melanoma awareness and sun safety, Sally Everett. Sally shares a deeply personal journey that led her to become a board member for the Australian Skin Cancer Foundation.
In September 2021, Sally's beloved father, Lionel, was diagnosed with a shocking and massive 22cm internal melanoma. Despite being one of the most sun-safe individuals Sally knew, her family had no idea that melanomas could be internal and faced immense challenges navigating information and supporting resources during their ordeal.
Devastatingly, Lionel passed away in November 2021. In the aftermath of this loss, Sally and her family made a courageous decision to share their story, spreading awareness about melanoma and advocating for better education and support resources. Their mission became clear: to emphasize the significance of sun protection, regular skin checks, and early detection.
In this episode, Sally sheds light on the importance of understanding melanoma risks, early detection, and the significance of consistent sun protection practices. She shares her advocacy journey and how she, as a non-medical professional, is determined to create education and awareness to prevent other families from enduring the pain of losing loved ones to this devastating disease.
Tune in to this powerful episode as we learn from Sally's personal experience, garner insights on melanoma awareness, and gain a deeper appreciation for the impact of sun safety in our lives.

On 1 July 2023 Anthony & Sally were invited to attend the Narromine Lions Club 70th Anniversary celebrations.
Sally was honoured to accept a donation from the Lions Club towards the work Mission Melanoma Doing It For Lionel & Australian Skin Cancer Foundation are doing around educating & advocacy in the Melanoma & Non Melanoma Skin Cancer areas.
This generous donation is much appreciated & will go to very good use helping us achieve our four pillars of the foundation being;
Advocacy
Education
Research and
Support
As well life saving initiatives like the Skin Check Truck being on the road travelling the country providing accessible & affordable skin checks.
The continued support from our local Narromine, Dubbo & surrounding communities is something we are forever grateful for & our mission has so much we still want to achieve 💛
We can’t wait to bring the Skin Check Bus to Narromine in October. Details coming soon!
Yesterday the Narromine Jets Senior Rugby League held their annual charity & sponsors day.
This year Australian Skin Cancer Foundation was nominated as one of the beneficiaries as they wanted to be part of our .
The Jets wore special jerseys representing the colours & logo of ASCF. They looked amazing.
These jerseys were auctioned after the game & an absolutely phenomenal $15, 740 was raised!!
This was distributed evenly between three organisations doing important work in our community, ASCF, Narromine Cancer Support Group & Narromine VRA. The Jets have such an incredible community & are so much more than just a football club.
Thank you Jets & the Narromine Community for your ongoing support of Mission Melanoma. Please get a skin check ❤️
Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d share a post like this. Im one of the lucky ones. Mine was caught so early thanks to the skill & expertise of the Molemap Australia nurse & not Melanoma.
Dads face sadly is on the truck where I had the check but I’m 100% positive it was his influence that made that check happen 🧡.
My gorgeous neices in pictured with me also has their skin checked. It’s never to early to start the education, awareness & checks!
These are the moments we live for! Catching skin cancer early and ensuring our patients never miss a moment. ❤️
It’s been a month since the Australian Skin Cancer Foundation Skin Cancer Truck hit the road with MoleMap, and the impact has been remarkable!
At our first event in Manly, Sally, a board member of the ASCF who sadly lost her dad to melanoma, had her spots checked by MoleMap. After our melanographer noticed an unusual spot on the right side of her chest, which she suspected was a BCC, Sally returned home and followed up with her local GP for a biopsy. The verdict? A basal cell carcinoma skin cancer.
We are so grateful to do what we do and help diagnose skin cancer early. Wishing Sally a speedy recovery!
We had such an incredible day last year, can’t wait to do it all again 🧡.

These jerseys the players will be wearing are incredible & will be actioned off at the Narromine USMC after the games with funds being divided between three very worthy charities, ASCF, Narromine Rescue Squad & Narromine Cancer Support Group.

Here is a reminder why regular skin checks are so important.
Last Friday at the launch of the skin check truck, Sally had her skin checked, her 12 month check up was due so took the opportunity.
The lovely nurse found a couple of sun spots on the hands & something on the chest that she thought was a pimple. The nurse recommended a follow up appointment with my GP, which she did on Wednesday.
The sun spots were burnt off. The spot which thought was a pimple seems very low risk, not Melanoma, but perhaps a low risk basil cell carcinoma, but taking preventative action.
Just reinforcing;
✅ Skin Checks are incredibly important
✅ This truck is already changing lives

Australia’s First Skin Check Truck was launched this morning.
86 faces of loved ones lost to Melanoma feature on this truck, including Lionel. He will now travel Australia on a truck that is a game changer in making skin checks accessible & saving lives.
What an emotional morning! We love & miss you Dad 💛
We are so excited to see this truck roll into Narromine in October. Stay tuned for details 🧡
It’s men’s health awareness week this week.
One of the lessons reinforced with Dad, was if something doesn’t look or feel right, get it checked, health is nothing to be complacent with.
When was your last skin check 🧡
Thank you Narromine Jets Senior Rugby League for the support of our & Australian Skin Cancer Foundation 🧡
Happy National Suncreen Day!
Don’t be dismissive with your sun protection, UV rays still exist in winter & burn your skin all year round.
Something Lionel used to say all the time “just because it’s cloudy doesn’t mean your not going to get burnt!”
🧴 Skin Cancer accounts for the largest amount of cancers diagnosed in Australia each year.
🧴 Wearing suncreen can lower your chance of getting Melanoma by 50%
🧴 Sunscreen must be reapplied at least every 90 minutes when outdoors to be most effective.
It’s here. It’s a game changer & a life saver. 🧡
Thank you to Sharon from the Western Plains App for the great article on Australian Skin Cancer Foundation Melanoma Mates Initiative & always being such a great supporter of our Mission Melanoma 🧡
Melanoma Mates - no one should feel like they are unsupported on what can be a very scary & lonely journey.
Game changer, life saver 🧡
This week Narromine has played home to the Trakmaster Off Road Caravan Group.
Whilst they have been here supporting our local region they have been fundraising to give back to the local community & this afternoon held a presentation to a number of different local organisations, one of which was Mission Melanoma Doing It For Lionel - supporting the Australian Skin Cancer Foundation.
Sally was honoured to be presented with their donation & we thank them for their generosity & support of our mission 🧡.
May is Melanoma Awareness Month.

🔍 Knowing your family history of Melanoma could save your life. The increased risk might be because of a shared family lifestyle of frequent sun exposure or a family tendency to have fair skin.
There is no sure way to prevent melanoma, but there are things you can do that could lower your risk of getting melanoma and other skin cancers:
☀️ Incorporating sunscreen into your daily routine, even when it’s cloudy outside.
☀️ Wearing a hat and sunglasses and protective clothing.
☀️ Booking an annual skin cancer check.
