There are two main narratives we are told about welcoming immigrants into our countries:
1) the "villain narrative" which claims immigrants harm society by taking jobs
2) the "victim narrative" which claims it is our "moral responsibility" to support immigrants
Is there a third narrative that tells us otherwise, a third narrative that is truly representative of the value immigrants offer our society?
Exequiel (Zeke) Hernandez, Professor at Wharton School of Business and author of "The Truth About Immigration: Why Successful Societies Welcome Newcomers", joins me on The Human Challenge to share more about this third narrative, the data behind it, and his own personal story about immigrating into the USA.

Signs of Spring (even when there is snow)… blooming is starting…
I founded to empower each and every single one of us to embark on our own individual healing for the greater good of collective healing... when we combine mindfulness, arts/culture, and community engagement, we can bring both of these journey's together for the collective good.
Some causes that matter to us:
- Indigenous rights and movements
- Women's rights and equality
- Sustainability causes
- Accessibility and inclusion
I have learned that to embody my higher self is a journey of trust… it is hard in a world that is constructed to prioritize the material aspects of life, but the more we turn inward, the more we return to the breath and body, the more space we create to hear our own truths.
The journey itself is one of consistent balancing between the ego and the higher Self, swinging like a pendulum, until we learn to surrender to the journey itself, we will create inner peace.
This practice is available free on the app, and is a gentle series of reminders to permit ourselves to surrender to Spirit and the higher Self.

I founded because I believe that each of us individually have the power to co-create a world that is more human; if each of harnessed this individual power, this collective power would be exponential. Our world would be equitable, safe for all human life, Mother Earth, and animal life.
I believe this power can be harnessed through the simple practices of mindfulness and meditation; as well as community engagement.

offering some words from my recent article in where I shared more about the intersect between humanity and
"Central to Vanessa’s ethos is integrating her personal experiences into her professional identity, a concept she articulates with touching clarity. She emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and honoring one’s past challenges, not as defining traits but as integral components of one’s evolution. This perspective is crucial for creating space for all aspects of oneself, allowing for a holistic approach to entrepreneurship and life.
Vanessa advocates for a deeply human approach to finding the balance between work and life, challenging the conventional dialogue around this topic. For her, the question transcends simple time management, delving into the essence of who we are and how we can remain truthful to that essence in all areas of our lives. Boundaries, as Vanessa explains, are less about separation and more about honoring our space, allowing us to make decisions that align with our true selves rather than external expectations.
Her reflections on dealing with personal trauma, such as an assault and the loss of her father, reveal a commitment to truthfulness and presence. Vanessa’s journey highlights the importance of allowing oneself to be seen in one’s entirety, embracing both strength and softness as the situation demands. This authenticity in showing up for oneself and others is a cornerstone of her philosophy, fostering a space where personal and professional lives can coexist harmoniously."

I've found myself recently gravitating towards a perspective of the human experience, of the journey, where any "phase" does not weigh any more or less importance than the other... where all experiences just blend together so there really is only one phase, and that phase is E V O L U T I O N

we can invite in healing and restoration through mindfulness and meditation and community engagement, in a way that meets everyone in their own journey...

This beautiful quote by Desmond Tutu is one we use to talk about because it sums up the inter-relatedness of humanity, the nature of inter-being.
our founder, , believes that our humanity is connected; our equity is connected, and the same power we all hold within to be human to ourselves is the driver of our ability to be human to each other, but also with each other
The Being Human Foundation is dedicated to empowering humankind towards our interbeing; follow on instagram or subscribe at vanessaferlaino.com/thebeinghumanfoundation to stay in touch with some of our exciting updates.

to me, manifestation is about creating space within to find alignment with Spirit, source, God, Universe, whatever resonates with you...
it is creation of space through healing and inner work that allows us to align w intentionality... often this means we hold space w ourselves through these moments of change and transformation and outgrowth...
when we create this space, we embrace intentionality, we align w truth, we enter flow and more importantly, oneness, so that manifesting becomes about co-creation

To empower toward a more “human world”, we need to explore the human condition.
These books, chosen by our founder and President, , explore human nature through vastly different ideologies in our current structure of society.
It is knowledge from these different areas that can challenge us to think differently.
Top Reads:
✨ The World According to Color / Dr. James Fox
BAFTA-nominated broadcaster and art historian, Dr. James Fox, goes through 7 elemental colors using stories, mythologies, and art history to show us how the meanings of color has evolved through time, culture, and civilizations, opening up our minds to the evolution of human nature.
B O N U S: check out Vanessa's interview on The Human Challenge with Dr. James Fox at https://youtube.com/live/j_J6yDo5sKo?feature=share
✨ Humankind: A Hopeful History / Rutger Bregman
In this book, journalist and writer, Rutger Bregman, challenges the assumption that humans are "innately evil" by exploring current sociology and anthropology theories, how they rose to fame, and introducing other data and stories that challenge these representations and factual bases.
✨ Braiding Sweetgrass / Robin Wall Kimmerer
In this thoughtfully-written book, botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer invites us into the world of nature and its wisdom. She shares many cultural and personal stories as a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, weaving the impact of patriarchal and institutional systems on these stories. Robin will give you a whole new perspective of how the human condition is shaped by nature.
✨ White Tears, Brown Scars / Ruby Hamad
Ruby, an author and journalist, addresses culture, patriarchy, and colonization to put to words the phenomenon many of us experience and witness when it comes to white feminism and its harmful role in perpetuating racism. Ruby's arguments will force you to question how this socialization has informed your own actions and beliefs so you can make a difference in your own intentions.
✨ Siddhartha / Hermann Hesse
This story is the journey of all journeys, the search of all searches, through suffering, enlightenment, and back to that sense of eternal truth, eternal timelessness. The difference between knowledge and wisdom, thoughts and words, soul and life, is the “song of a thousand voices”, the universal OM and the sense of oneness we must rediscover for ourselves and each other.

an offering of healing, grace, and presence...
creating space w the breath
holding space w ourselves and whatever may arise
honouring this space for whatever is present, allowing for it to be here, accepting it is part of the human experience
and when it feels like there is no space, asking "what is taking up space?" opens up a 'detachment practice' and invites me back to grace, at whatever pace is natural...
Robert Frost said “FREEDOM LIES IN BEING BOLD”
Boldness is being true to you.
Bring brave to question the conditioning and step beyond it;
Having the courage to remain true to creating change;
And being consistent in our intentionality also is bold, as consistency itself requires us to be present, aware, and open.
This boldness is gracious in nature, not seeking external validation or thriving in competition.
Taken together, we find freedom within and without, and this gracious boldness is what creates change and impact, by allowing us to show up “wholefully” in our communities and support its just and equitable construction.
Pls be invited to discover your own boldness, its truthful nature, and intention.
I graciously offer some mindfulness meditations for this… if there is interest in practicing … pls be welcome to DM. All experiences welcome.
Free practices also available on app at the linkinbio.

This a.m … while using my new “everyone is doing their best” became “we are all human” ..
we all have our shadows .. but we all have our light …
How are we holding space for both …
If we cling onto lightness, we are ungrounded in reality
If we stay in our shadows, we are ungrounded in the present
So we honour the light for its lightness and shadows for its darkness
We allow for what is to be …
Until it passes …
Life is a flow …
Shadows are shadows … lightness is light …
One becomes the other
So our shadows are also our light just as our light is also our shadows 🙏🏽❤️
