One of our incredible members smashing it today challenging Sir Desmond Swayne on the Green New Deal. More info at
Connor says:
“He didn’t give me much time to respond so let’s break down some of what was said.
He claimed that a Green New Deal was problamatic because it asked the public to make “Extraordinary changes to their lifestyle.”
It’s true that decarbonisation will mean giving up some of the more extravagant luxuries that we in the west enjoy. However, it will also guarantee clean air, clean drinking water and prevent climate change induced natural disasters. Swayne’s implication that the Green New Deal will adversely affect the public is just not true.
“We have taken leadership on this.”
In 2019 the European Environment Agency found the UK to rank 25th out of 30 nations for water quality. More recently the government approved the Abigail oil field to go ahead despite it being clearly incompatible with climate targets. We are NOT a world leader on climate change.
“New houses from 2025 to take those standards [on insulation] into account.”
That will only be a tiny percentage of houses existing in the UK. Retrofitting is the only way to ensure proper mass insulation.
“Not easy problems to solve.”
Neither is living through ecological collapse.
“In a democracy you have to take the public with you.”
This is absolutely true. However, the best way to do this would be through citizens’ assemblies on the climate crisis., something most conservatives oppose.”
WELL DONE CONNOR 👏🏻✊🏻
Yesterday was Transgender Day of Remembrance. We remember and mourn those lost to ignorance and transphobic violence, and stand with those fighting today.

To continue with our celebrations of inspirational black environmentalists, today we are highlighting the work of Wangari Maathai 💚
Wangari was an incredible activist and pioneer for many reasons; not only was she the first African woman to revive the Nobel Peace Prize, but was also the first female scholar in East and Central Africa to take a doctorate, and the first female professor in Kenya.
In 1977, Wangari started the “Green Belt Movement”- a campaign that encouraged women to plant trees in their local environments. This spread to surrounding African countries, resulting in over thirty million trees being planted.
Wangari Maathai’s influence was not solely isolated to environmentalism, but also women’s rights and solidarity 💚
The image shows Wangari Maathai stood in front of a backdrop of the African savanna, with text imposed over the image reading “Wangari Maathai: First African woman to receive a Nobel Peace Prize for her work against deforestation- The Green Belt Movement”.

Black influential figure Friday 💚
This week for Black History Month, we are celebrating Dr John Francis. Alongside a picture of Dr John Francis waving on a path with a backpack, the image reads- “Also known as the “planet-walker”, after witnessing an oil spill in California, Dr John Francis stopped using motorised transportation all together. He has travelled most of America on foot, and is also the program director for Planetwalk, a nonprofit environmental awareness organization.”
John earned his nickname the “planet-walker” due to his on foot expeditions across the globe, such as his treks across the United States, sailing the Caribbean, walking the length of South America, and making a “brief” one-month stop in Antarctica.
The organisation “Planet Walk” encourages students to interact with the environment around them through walking, building a relationship with nature and considering how human actions impact the world around us.

Black Influential Figure Friday 💚
This week we are highlighting the work of Jeannine Kayembe. The image reads “Co-executive Director and Co-Founder of The Urban Creators- founded by a diverse group of young people, unified by a vision to bridge the gap between isolated communities and transforming a 2-acre garbage dump into a farm.”
Jeannine Kayembe is a Black Q***r thought leader and multi-media artist in this generation’s industries of entertainment, civic engagement, food security, and arts/environmental activism. Through her leadership at The Urban Creators, Jeannine aims to change the narrative of what environmental justice can mean by changing the environment of her neighborhood into a safer space using healthy food and public art.
As well as her environmental endeavours, Jeannine focuses on preventing erasure of minority voices from society by painting portraits of them, such as her best friend Gizzle, a QWOC rapper, making her a great role model to amplify for Black History Month! 💚💚

To mark Black History Month, every Friday we will be celebrating an inspirational environmental activist of black heritage. Black figures are often forgotten in history, or overshadowed by white people in the same field. This is what makes Black History Month so imperative, and it is important that we all make an effort to honour the incredible endeavours of these role models.
This week, we are highlighting the work of environmentalist Savi Horne. The image reads “Savonala ‘Savi’ Horne- Executive Director of the Land Loss Prevention Project- an organization that works to stop land loss in African-American communities throughout North Carolina.”
Savi also offers support for farmers to make their work economically and environmentally sustainable. Her work is vital in protecting struggling agriculturalists and ensuring their work continues to cultivate the planet rather than harm.
