I got a call from a friend's Son-In-Law yesterday and he had some questions about his experience with his movers. The movers he hired did a walkthrough and quoted him a 4 hour minimum and estimated that the job would take 6 hours. The movers ended up taking 10 hours and are still not finished and were having to come back today to finish everything up. He said that two of the three on his crew smelled of marijuana and were smoking on the job. He asked me if it is typical for moving companies to give low estimates. I explained to him that there are SOME moving companies that will bid low estimates for the purpose of getting hired knowing that they will be able to bill more once the job is done and that you have no choice but to pay it because they have your stuff. I would like to say that it isn't common, but I've heard too many horror stories to say that it doesn't happen very often. I also hear it from my movers that have worked for companies where that was their practice. As for the workers smoking and smelling like weed. I also wish I could say that is uncommon in the industry, but moving is really hard work and usually the only people who work in moving are the people who have no other options. That's why one of the greatest compliments our team has received is "your team really takes pride in their work and they actually enjoy what they do". So my Saturday turned into us spending some time to help fill up the unused top space of a storage unit to help make everything fit.
