The Wall That Heals - Chambers County
The Wall That Heals is a travelling 3/4 replica of the Vietnam Veteran Memorial located in Washingto
The numbers are in!
We had almost 4500 visitors from all over the state of Texas and from Louisiana, as well, over the 4 days that Wall That Heals was in Chambers County.
We taught over 900 high school and middle school students a lesson in our nations history through the school tours that were done on Thursday and Friday.
We welcomed almost 800 veterans and their families to our pinning ceremony on Saturday morning. Congressman Babin pinned over 150 Vietnam Veterans and over 50 families of deceased Vietnam era veterans that day.
Good Morning all.
We have received our shipment of Family and Veteran Commemorative Pins. If you weren't able to get your pin at the ceremony last Saturday or if your family only received one pin and you would like to get a pin for other family members, please let us know and we will make sure that everyone who wants one receives one. You can message me, call me, or just reply to this message and we will get your requests filled ASAP.
Thank you to everyone who attended the ceremony and to those who came to visit the exhibit while it was in Chambers County.
I would also like to personally thank all of the volunteers who signed up to help make this idea become reality. Without our volunteers, this event would have never happened and I will be forever grateful to each and every one of you for your help.
That’s a wrap.
This afternoon we say goodbye to The Wall That Heals as it travels to its next community to spread healing through interaction and exposure.
This week was an overwhelming success that wouldn’t have been possible without the work of literally hundreds of people.
To our Co-Chairs Loretta Emmons and Heather Hawthorne, thank you for spending the last year working to bring this event to Chambers County. You began working on this effort before many of us even knew what The Wall That Heals was and we are so grateful that you brought this experience to our back yard.
To our Volunteer Coordinator Sheri Phelps, thank you for coordinating the hundreds of volunteers, single handed my registering most of the Vietnam Veterans that we were able to contact and being willing to step in wherever needed.
To our committee members and volunteers, thank you for donating your time and skills.
To Chambers County Commissioners Court, Chambers County Sheriffs Office and Chambers County Parks Department, thank you for the tens of thousands of dollars that you spent to make this happen. From the $25,000 for marketing to the money spent to prepare the site to staff time and salaries, we couldn’t have done this without you.
And to everyone else who lent a hand, supported this effort or visited… thank you.
This shining success was because of the sense of community that is present not only in Chambers County, but in this region and we are proud to be a part of it.
We are thankful for the support of Dr. Babin and a host of Chambers County area officials who took the time to recognize and honor the fallen Vietnam War service members whose names are enshrined on The Wall, living Vietnam Veterans and families of Vietnam Veterans.
The Wall will be open for just a few more hours. The last playing of Taps will take place at 1:45 p.m. and The Wall officially closes at 2 p.m.
We hope to see you at White Memorial Park today before the opportunity to interact with history so close to home passes us by.
(The Wall That Heals is a traveling three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veteran Memorial.)
Today we honored many fallen service members, Vietnam Era Veterans and their families. The Pinning Ceremony was incredibly moving and we could not have anticipated the turn out.
It’s hard to believe that The Wall That Heals will be leaving Chambers County tomorrow. This project has been a year long labor of love for our Co-Chairs and hundreds of volunteers. We are honored to be able to share this experience with all of you.
Visit The Wall at White Memorial Park through 2 p.m. tomorrow. Visitors are welcome throughout the night.
The final playing of Taps will be held at 1:45 p.m. and at 2 p.m. our volunteer crews will begin disassembling the display so that it can travel to its next community.
More than 600 veterans, family members and community members are at Whites Park this morning to honor Vietnam Era Veterans and the the fallen Vietnam soldiers whose names are enshrined on The Wall That Heals.
As Keynote Speaker Master Sergeant Kisha S. White said, we are proud to right the wrong done to those who served, who were blamed for a war they did not start and treated poorly upon their return home.
The Wall will remain open 24 hours per day through Sunday at 2 p.m. There is no cost to attend.

We are incredibly grateful for the large financial contribution that both the ESA Sorority and Chambers County Historical Commission made to help bring The Wall That Heals to Chambers County.
Without these two organizations and all of the other sponsors this effort would not have been possible.
Since the Vietnam War ended, thousands of Vietnam veterans have suffered due to Agent Orange exposure, PTSD and other illnesses as a result of their service. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) believes all those who served in Vietnam should be honored and remembered for their service. The In Memory program enables the families and friends of those who came home and later died the opportunity to have them be forever memorialized.
If you know of a Vietnam veteran who returned home and later died, you can apply to honor them for their service through VVMF’s In Memory program. Learn more at: vvmf.org/In-Memory-Program
