Swimmers have to be extra careful in the sun and water and I’d love to share with you some safe and effective, non-toxic ways to care for you and your family this summer.

Starfish float as you know is my favorite survival skill to teach! This is so important as we just had another unfortunate drowning this month on Oahu. Let’s keep our keiki safe and teach them water safety!
The most important water safety skill your child can learn is to float on their back. It’s not the only thing they should learn, but if there was one skill that is an absolute must, it’s this one.
It is the one position they can get in and stay in for minutes, rather than seconds, and be able to breathe while they wait for help to come for them.
Remember, air is life.
You want them to know the position they can use to find that air. It just might save their life!!
This is why I encourage swim lessons even for kids who already know how to swim. Water safety and being prepared is essential!
Rip currents are a very, very common reason for drownings. They often form around jetties, piers and anything that juts out into the ocean (However they can and do form at other areas around the shore as well). That is why you see “No Swimming” signs around these places.
They are there for good reason. Rip currents will take you out into the ocean. They are stronger than you are, even if you are a good swimmer. Swimming against one will just tire you out, but you won’t make progress to shore if you do this.
If you get caught in one, let it take you until you can swim to the side of the current, parallel to shore. Then swim away from the current. Once you are out of it, you can safely swim back to the shore.
Stay away from jetties and piers. Do not swim anywhere close to them.
Always swim near a lifeguard station.
Use life jackets in open water, even if you can swim. There are too many uncontrolled factors in open water that can override your swimming ability to risk not wearing a life jacket there.
Happy Easter 🐣🐰🐇 enjoy your day off!
