May She Always Know
I want my daughter
to know her own strength,
to know love without borders,
and dream at great length.
I hope she is brave,
and I hope she reads books,
when people say she’s pretty -
she’ll know it’s more than her looks.
For she’s pretty smart,
and she’s pretty kind.
May she be heard for her voice,
and seen for her mind.
As she grows into a woman
I hope she stands strong.
For some will try to knock her,
but I hope she holds on.
Because her power is great,
and cannot be measured.
Her passion and vulnerability
should always be treasured.
May she know the difference
between right and wrong,
not because of some rules,
but what is in her heart’s song.
May she question the narrative,
make choices, speak clear.
May she never repeat herself
out of doubt or fear.
May she strive for big things
in a world that screams thin,
just as a man’s size does not define him.
I hope she sticks up for those who need it,
herself included; I hope she believes it.
May no one dim her light,
May it shine
May it grow
What a force that she is.
May she always know.

Something we need to know about our bodies:

1. If your throat itches, scratch your ear:
By pressing the nerves in the ear, an immediate reflex is generated in the throat which produces spasms and relieves the discomfort.

2. If you have a dull nose:
Press your palate and the top of your nose. Touch the palate with your tongue firmly and with one finger hold your nose under the groin. This allows the secretions to move and you can breathe.

3. When you get acid sleep on your left side:
This allows you to create an angle between the stomach and esophagus, so that acids can't pass down the throat.

4. When your tooth hurts rub ice on your hand:
You must pass the piece of ice through the v-shaped area between the thumb and the index finger on the opposite side of the palm. This reduces pain by 50%, as this sector is connected to the facial pain receptors.

5. When you get burned, press the wound with one finger:
After cleaning the affected area, apply pressure with your hand on the burn, as this allows you to return to the initial temperature and prevents blisters from appearing. (for minor burns)

6. When running, breathe when you're holding your left foot:
This will prevent you from feeling itchy in the chest, because if you breathe when you support your right foot, you cause pressure on the liver.

7. If your nose bleeds, apply pressure with your finger:
If you stand back you can choke on your blood, so it's best to squeeze with your finger the side of the nose where you're bleeding.

8. To control your heart beat when you're nervous:
Put your thumb in your mouth and blow, this will help your heart stop beating so fast from breathing.

9. To relieve headaches when you drink very icy water:
When you drink something really frozen, the palate cools down and the brain interprets it. This is why you must place your tongue on your palate to get it back to its normal temperature.

10. Prevent lack of vision when in front of the PC:
When you put your sight on a nearby object like a computer, the sight gets tired and fails. For this, close your eyes, contract your body and hold your breath for a moment. Then relax everything. Holy remedy.

11. Wake your sleepy hands and feet by moving your head:
When an arm or hand falls asleep, turn your head from side to side and you'll see how the feeling passes in less than 1 minute, as the upper limbs fall asleep, due to pressure in the neck. Meanwhile, if it's a leg or a foot, just walk a few seconds.

12. Easy method to hold your breath underwater: Before you dive in, do lots of fast and strong breaths to get the acid from the blood to disappear, because this is what causes the sensation of drowning.

13. Memorize texts at night:
Anything you read before bedtime, you will remember more easily

I used to wonder what happened to mums when they had a child. Where did they go?

Almost symbolically, they seemed to gradually disappear from their own pictures and be replaced instead by baby photos. I don't know why but it used to irk me a bit. I would wonder; how was it possible to get so completely lost in motherhood?

NOW I GET IT.

There IS a loss of identity when you become a mum. Well, there certainly was for me.

You become consumed with all these things that never crossed your mind before; milk intake, nappy output, nap timings, meal plans, teething remedies. And somewhere along the way, you lose yourself a bit.

You forget how to talk about things outside the realm of mothering. You lose touch of the things that used to make you tick. Your repertoire becomes limited, and let's be honest, a little bit dull.

Thankfully you find other mums; people you maybe wouldn't have got on that well with before, but you're all rattling around in this lost property box together.

I know deep down that I have gone awol since becoming a mum. I have almost forgotten that there is a world out there, distinct from motherhood, that I can also subscribe to. And share with Casey. I'm sure he too would like to know the person beyond mum.

And so I am slowly trying to reclaim my me-ness. I'm finding when I do, he actually enjoys it more. It feels more authentic. Just little things like we'll have a dance around to the music that I love rather than the wiggles or taking the time to look half-human in the morning and repainting my old face on again.

It can be a balancing act, trying to help this little person develop their identity, whilst not forgetting your own.

MY BABY IS NOT SITTING PROPERLY IN THE WOMB - IS THIS POSSIBLE?

Her traditional birth attendant told her, her baby is not sitting properly on the sit in the womb and so will have to put the baby properly on it.

She will do so by trying to turn the baby to sit properly in the womb.

When she told me, I knew exactly where she was going with the conversation.

When I worked in a rural community some women will be rushed with severe bleeding.
Upon investigation you will realise they have tried to turn the baby from one position to another.

This leads to placenta detaching and causing massive bleeding. Imagine doing this without any scan and professional skills. Don't let any one turn the position on your baby at home

Please mums your life is precious

There is no sit in your womb!

If you have a breech birth, kindly discuss your mode of delivery with your midwife or doctor

Don't risk your life

Jaundice is a condition that can affect anyone of any age but is more common in newborns. It's extremely common, affecting around 60% of newborns overall and 80% of premature babies.

Jaundice occurs when there is too much of a substance called bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellow waste product of red blood cells and it's the livers job to remove it. A baby's liver is immature so often are unable to remove the bilirubin quick enough, causing an excess amount to build up.

There are two types of jaundice in newborns - physiological (also referred to as breastmilk jaundice), and pathological.

Physiological jaundice usually occurs around 3 days after the baby is born and causes mild yellowing. It's fairly common in breastfed babies and usually resolves itself after a couple of weeks with lots of feeding. Occasionally it can go on for longer but seldom causes any issues and can be considered to actually be a normal adjustment to life on the outside of the womb for many babies.

Pathological jaundice is not normal and can sometimes occur within 24 hours of life causing severely high bilirubin levels. This type of jaundice may be caused by liver or blood disorders.

If you are breastfeeding and your baby is jaundiced, continue to feed your baby every couple of hours. If there are feeding issues, seek the support of an infant feeding specialist to help.

There are several indicators of jaundice, including yellowing, which is easier to identify in babies with light coloured skin, bright yellow urine, yellow whites of the eyes, soles of feet and palms of hands and yellowing of gums. Gently pressing the tip of the nose may display some yellowing of the skin too.

Some of these signs are subtle, whilst others are obvious. A very obviously jaundiced baby may need a blood test to check how high the bilirubin levels are. If high, your baby may need to go under a UV lamp to help clear the jaundice. In rare cases, the bilirubin levels are high enough to warrant a blood transfusion.
A very jaundiced baby may be really sleepy and difficult to wake for feeds. If you suspect jaundice, be sure to raise with your care provider

The excitement of a newborn! It's quite a novelty when a new baby is born but how many people actually stop to think about the mother before rushing off to the hospital or house the minute she returns? .
After a woman has given birth she is exhausted physically and it's an extremely overwhelming time. The combination of trying to bond with baby, establish breastfeeding, dealing with postpartum blood loss, little sleep and stitches can become all to much for some new mothers.
Many of us are happy to have a close family member visit us soon after the birth, especially when they are helpful ie making food, carrying out some simple chores etc. Having a barrage of visitors though can actually be quite stressful and irritating when everyone wants to pass the baby around (there's always that one person who won't give the baby back when they cry - they think they can soothe them better than mum)
Taking a few days to recover and spend time as a family is a great way to start life with a new baby without worrying about your appearance for visitors, if you're leaking or if they need a cup of coffee. If you do decide you want visitors, make them useful and make sure they wash their hands before holding the baby!

Do you ever wonder what your newborn baby can see?

👁 Newborns can only see black, white and grey shades when they are first born, their ability to see colours develops later (nearer to 4 months).

👁 Your baby sees things best from 8 to 12 inches away. So they are near sighted. This is the perfect distance for gazing up into the fave of their parents! They recognise use their parents faces even from an early age ❤️

👁 Any farther than 8-12 inches and newborns see everything blurry. At birth, a newborn's eyesight is between 20/200 and 20/400.

👁 Their eyes are sensitive to bright light, so they may not open their eyes much in sunlight or a brightly lit room!

👁 And don’t worry if your baby's eyes sometimes cross. This is normal until your baby's vision improves and eye muscles strengthen. They don’t usually stay that way!

Did you have an anterior placenta?

An anterior placenta is when your placenta attaches to the front wall of your uterus as shown in the picutre.

This is a totally normal place for your placenta to implant and develop however but there are a few things to be aware of.

This is not the same as having a low lying placenta or a placenta previa. It basically means your placenta is a cushion between your baby and your belly. In fact it is not likely to cause you any complications at all. It is a variation on normal placenta placement.

There is one issue many women face when they have an anterior placenta, this is feeling their baby’s movements.

You may feel them later on in your first pregnancy – around 20 – 24 weeks and that is basically because the placenta is in front of all those little wriggling limbs.

It is often hard for women with an anterior placenta to notice movements but it is really important that you don’t put a change or reduction in movements down to your placenta site. Always go and be checked if you are concerned.

After 32 weeks your baby generally develops a movement pattern and you need to get to know this! You anterior placenta has nothing to do with how much baby moves, more how you experience those movements.

Many women describe their movements as dull when they have an anterior placenta. Imagine kicking a man in the crown jewels when he has a pillow in front of him…. Much less impact right!

Remember no matter where your placenta is you need to get to know your baby’s normal movement pattern and if you are ever concerned about anything then do go for a check with your midwife/doctor.

Many women will worry about breastfeeding after a c-section. Although it can be trickier to breastfeed after a c-section due to discomfort from the incision, with the right support and positioning, breastfeeding should be possible. .
After a c-section, skin to skin can be done to help initiate feeding. The baby can lay across your chest to avoid your wound. Once in the recovery area, you may need assistance to get into a comfortable position to feed as your legs will likely still be numb. The first feed is recommended within an hour of birth but that can be delayed a little after a c-section.
If you are sitting you may want to put a pillow on your lap to protect your wound. You could always try side lying with baby as there wont be any pressure on your abdominal area at all. Make sure you get the help of your midwife, nurse, doula or lactation consultant to guide you with positioning and latching.
As the days go by you will begin to feel better and nursing will become easier. When you are home try to enlist as much help as possible with tasks in the house so that you can just focus on yourself and your baby. Resting, eating, drinking and feeding your baby will be your main focus in the early days!
You may be prescribed some medicines to help with pain and perhaps antibiotics/blood thinners too. You will usually only be prescribed medicines that are safe for breastfeeding but if in doubt check with your prescriber. The painkiller Codeine is not prescribed at all in the UK to breastfeeding mothers and that includes co-codamol.

What unrealistic expectations have you faced in your pregnancy and motherhood journey? ⁣

Let’s face it. We have unrealistic expectations of everyone. Women. Men. Parents. Children. Friends. Colleagues. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It’s nothing new. But it can be so damaging to our mental health to have these expectations, especially when they are not even our own. ⁣
⁣⁣
Now these are just a small sample of things I could have written. I generalised. If you were to choose I am sure this may look different - to be honest I don’t think there is a post big enough to accommodate the expectations placed on our shoulders (or is that just me). ⁣
⁣⁣
But setting unrealistic expectations on others and on ourselves is only a road to heartbreak. Nothing is how it seems on social media. Or in real life. We usually only show what we presume is our “best selves” the outside world. ⁣
⁣⁣
You cannot measure yourself using someone else’s ruler. ⁣So don’t bother trying. Do whatever works for you and your family first! If you don’t meet someones expectations then that is their problem, not yours! ⁣
⁣⁣
So if you feel you are running ragged trying to keep it all together and please everyone you can, just stop. Take a breath. And do one thing that is not “expected” of you. Do something for you! You do not exist to conform to gender roles and maternal stereotypes!

Did the midwife/doctor put a hat on your baby when they were first born?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
𝐃𝐨 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐬 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐬? ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Well in short….. No. I find the practice varies from hospital to hospital here but what we are actually in danger of doing is instilling bad habits from the first breath. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
𝗪𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐛𝐚𝐛𝐲 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐡𝐚𝐭:⁣⁣
⁣⁣
🤱🏼 Skin to skin is best: Evidence tells us that skin to skin with your baby is the best way to regulate their temperature. Even if for some reason you are unable to do this your partner can! During skin-to-skin contact, if your baby feels too hot, your body will cool down, and if your baby feels too cold, your body will heat up.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
🤱🏼 It interferes with bonding: That delicious new baby smell we get a hit of every time we smell our baby’s heads. From the minute your baby is placed on your chest that bonding begins. A hat can inhibit that. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
🤱🏼 Babies wearing a hat indoors or who have their head covered with bedding are at risk of overheating. This then puts them at higher risk of SIDS (Sudden infant death syndrome).⁣⁣
⁣⁣
🤱🏼 Babies lose their excess heat from their head if they are too hot. If their head is covered they cannot regulate this.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
𝐒𝐨 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐛𝐚𝐛𝐲 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐧? ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
👒 They may have them on if they are in the NICU (to assist temperature regulation when they are premature/unwell).⁣⁣
⁣⁣
👒 Maybe in the theatre following caesarean birth (in a cold environment where skin to skin is still not possible in some hospitals).⁣⁣
⁣⁣
👒 If it is cold outside and you are walking around.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So ditch the hats indoors and have skin to skin at birth and beyond! ⁣⁣

Post birth where do you start? The reality is it is a long journey. ⁣

And so it should be. When you consider what your body has actually accomplished, how it’s changed and grown, then it’s no wonder your return to fitness takes longer than you think. ⁣

It takes 9 months to grow a human.... why would it take any less to return to fitness? ⁣

Take it seriously. It may be frustrating but laying the correct foundations in the initial postnatal period will make your return to fitness not only sensible and safe, but enjoyable! ⁣

Let’s break it down in to stages:⁣

𝐀𝐃𝐀𝐏𝐓: This is your time to adapt to this new phase of your life, with your new tiny human. Staying in bed, managing your pain, getting to know each other. ⁣

𝐑𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑: This is further time to rest. But we use gentle movement as a recovery aid. Breathing exercises, pelvic floor work and gentle movement are all appropriate here no matter what delivery you have had! ⁣

𝐑𝐄𝐇𝐀𝐁: Here we look at movement patterns, posture, we continue to reconnect that mind/muscle pathway that is often distorted due to pregnancy and birth trauma.⁣

𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐄: We use the principles from the previous stages to safely return you to strength training, with a focus on conditioning too. ⁣

𝐑𝐄𝐁𝐔𝐈𝐋𝐃: We have now created a strong foundation. Now we load it. We progress all movements. We reasses at every step to ensure you are where you need to be. ⁣

𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐆𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐒: We continue loading. By now your strength training can with progressively continue or have allowed you to get to a solid point in which to re enter your chosen sport. ⁣

𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳: 𝘐𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘢𝘺 𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘴. 𝘐𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴. 𝘖𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯! 𝘐𝘵 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘣𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶.
